Sandy Irvine and George Mallory vanished during their attempt to summit Mount Everest in June 1924, and the mystery over whether or not they reached the peak endures to this day.
On the snowy peaks of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, the dark object in the snow stood out. It was not trash, a piece of equipment, or a protruding stone. It was a boot with a sock inside that clearly identified it as belonging to A.C. Irvine. I join in your sentiments regarding him and his fellow explorer. May their souls rest in peace. I also hope at least that they achieved their goal and made it to the peak.
A brave man. I like to think that he and Mallory made it to the summit. If only their camera could be found one day.

It really is. I recall hiking and climbing in the 1960s with a heavy canvas backpack, army surplus sleeping bag, 20 pound canvas pup tent, heavy cloth coat, and hunting boots. I can't imagine doing Everest with that type of equipment.
Irvine’s camera would be a sort of “Holy Grail” of mountaineering, I would imagine.

I actually met someone who climbed Everest three times, and summited it twice. I wish I could’ve spent time with him, as I had a million questions. He actually came to my house and purchased one of my telescopes. What a thrill that was!

No, no. There are taller mountains in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. There are also deeper canyons in the oceans. ;-)
A whole new world is opening up to me! When that pod imploded on its way to the Titanic, I did a bunch of reading and saw an illustration of the different depth levels of the ocean, and where different things can be found. As deep as it is, the Titanic is nowhere - absolutely nowhere - near the bottom. Amazing!

I thought I had read somewhere that Mauna Kea was taller than Everest if you counted from the ocean floor.

The catch: it’s a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaii with its base about 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. In other words, more than half of it is submerged. When you add everything up, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 meters tall, way taller than the 8,850 meters of Mount Everest — making it the world’s tallest mountain. It’s also the tallest volcano on Earth.

World’s tallest mountains, as measured from base to peak. The base of a mountain can be difficult to define, as it can be below sea level, underground, or underwater. For example, Mauna Kea’s base is located on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, while the base of Mount Everest is located on the Tibetan Plateau.
