It's saturday, discuss.
Neil Peart- The Professor. One of the best.
Ginger Baker. A jazz drummer in a rock band.
I didn’t even know they were sick.
Spinal Tap lost more than its share.
Only 21? There are so many more. One I liked is Mike Botts. He toured with Linda Ronsdat and was the main drummer for Bread. He also sang and had a great voice.
“The #1 and 2 were, John Bonham and Keith Moon who died at age 32”
Booze killed them both, Bonham, literally with about 40 shots of Vodka resulting in inhalation of vomit (like Jimi although he was wired on sleeping pills) Moon OD’d on medicine that was supposedly helping him kick booze as he was a raging alcoholic.
We’ve only just begun, because where’s Karen Carpenter?
(On top of the world.)
A week ago i was at the special premiere of “Becoming Led Zeppelin”- it was beyond amazing.
Several things stood out to me including 1) how soft spoken John Henry Bonham was despite being one of the most powerful drummers of all time 2) watching Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones listen to a never heard before interview by Bonzo for the first time.
Alan White of Yes, who died just a few years ago, should be on this list.
I don't understand this list. They are mostly popular music drummers, but they include some jazz drummers, but only a few.
LIST OF SPINAL TAP DRUMMERS (ALL DECEASED)
John “Stumpy” Pepys (1964–1966) Died in a bizarre gardening accident, that the authorities said was “best left unsolved.”
Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs (1966–1967) Choked on vomit of unknown origin, perhaps but not necessarily his own, because “you can’t really dust for vomit.”
Peter “James” Bond (1967–1977) Spontaneously combusted on stage during a jazz festival on the Isle of Lucy.
Mick Shrimpton (1977–1982) Exploded onstage.
Joe “Mama” Besser (1982) Claimed he “couldn’t take this 4/4 shit”; according to an MTV interview with Spinal Tap in November 1991, he disappeared along with the equipment during their Japanese tour. He is either dead or playing jazz.
Richard “Ric” Shrimpton (1982–1999) Allegedly sold his dialysis machine for drugs; presumed dead.
Sammy “Stumpy” Bateman (1999-2001) Died trying to jump over a tank full of sharks while on a tricycle in a freak show.
Scott “Skippy” Scuffleton (2001–2007) Fate unknown.
Chris “Poppa” Cadeau (2007–2008) Eaten by his pet python Cleopatra.
Plus 9 other drummers at various times (Probably between 1970 and 1981) all of whom are dead
Weather Report had an awesome drummer.
Where’s
John “Stumpy” Pepys
Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs
Peter “James” Bond
Mick Shrimpton
Joe “Mama” Besser
?
What about the ones that died and ARE still with us?
Clive Burr from Iron Maiden should be on the list. He only played on the first 3 Maiden albums but he was the best heavy metal drummer ever IMO.
So-Are there drummers who have died and are still with us?
Kinda like those folks who tell us about a conversation they had with someone before they died.
John Bonham and Keith Moon died young. Ginger Baker lived to a ripe old age. I can’t remember his name but I believe the original drummer for The Prestenders also died very young - drugs. It seems to be a dangerous occupation.
Yes, Charlie had a good long run. And he always considered that Mick Jagger was his singer, not that he was Mick Jagger’s drummer.
