'Had we understood the dangers posed by the hippopotamus, we never would have agreed to be in such close contact while on foot,' Craig said

Craig, you paid the price for stupid. Walk away.

My daughter and I found ourselves surrounded by Bison in the
Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, when the old bull was challenged by the young bull for dominance of the herd.

We rolled down the back window of the Tundra, climbed into the bed and watched from about 100 feet away as the two fought for 30 minutes kicking up dust in the setting sun.

After the young bull forced the old guy to slink off in defeat, he trotted over to my truck stuck his nose into the bed where we had hit the deck, and grunted for about 2 minutes like he was going to flip the truck over to get at us.

But he didn’t.

That scene is emblazoned on my memory!

How ignorant could they be? But also, where were the tour operators’ attorneys when warnings and disclaimers should have been issued?

it’s not the tour operators fault. The animals do what animals do.

I had a friend who had been a zookeeper at the LA Zoo (I think that was the zoo). He was standing near a truck that was picking up a dumpster full of hippo poop. The dumpster slipped and fell over on top of him. He almost drowned in hippo poop. They rescued him in time and resuscitated him. I always wondered if they gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Not necessarily. As the old saying goes, danger invites rescue. Some years ago, my mother returned from a bus tour in Yellowstone with pictures of her gently pulling a fellow senior away from a bison, which was about twenty feet away.

My mother was being heroic. Her fellow tourist was the moron, having slipped past a guardrail and warning signs to get closer to the bison for the sake of a better picture. Fortunately, the great beast remained placid and undisturbed throughout.

I live just North of YNP — man the stupid people!

I recall when I was in college at Montana State and Reagan was President a photographer from France was taking pics of wildlife and, as is the point of this story, bison: he gave his camera to a tourist and asked the bloke to take a photo of him (the photographer) next to a buffalo.

The photo was snapped just as the bison was removing the Frenchman’s head via it’s horn...the head landed 40’ away and the professional photographer never took another photo ever again...

“...Anyone dumb enough to not think a hippo isn't an inherently dangerous animal is no great loss to society anyway...”

The guides must have given the ‘tourists’ credit for way more common sense than they actually possessed.

I wouldn’t step one inch away from the person with the weapon, while in proximity to any critter larger than ME, or where I could likely encounter a snake!
