On the east African coasts, they had been in “rough contact” with the wider Eurasian world since Pharaonic times - Pharoahs in the Middle Kingdom are known to have sponsored expeditions to the south.
And there was a trade route from what is now Somalia to India - right from at least 100 BC - a Buddha statue and numerous Indian (mostly Tamil but also Gujarati) merchant writings and goods are found at the red sea port of Berenike dating from around the time of Christ.
The east COAST was intermingling, not violent, until around 800 AD and the arrival of, say it together, Islam. But initially the people’s converted to Islam generally peacefully, and then they started grabbing slaves from inland and selling them to the Middle eastern world.
