What special thing happened in 1 BCE/CE to make it the “common era”??

Nothing.

In China the Han were in the middle of their dynasty, the same with India and the Guptas, in Rome it was 723 AUC etc. etc.

Even if one is an atheist, the year 1 AD makes for a good marking point.

BCE/CE are just nonsense
