I knew the island's name sounded familiar.

It's the site of the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history, that destroyed the Minoan civilization.

It's not just earthquakes they should be worried about...

The Minoan eruption (Santorini) in 1600 BC had an estimated VEI of 7.

The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora with a VEI of 7 and was the same.

The largest known eruption was Mount Toba in 72,000 BC, which killed off most humans alive at the time, had a estimated VEI of 8, which is categorized as a super volcanic eruption. Yellowstone also had a VEI of 8.

VEI = Volcanic Explosivity Index is a logarithmic scale with each increment being 10 time the previous, However, in terms of energy released each increment is 1000 times the previous, with a VEI of 10 releasing enough energy to split the planet in half.
