There is a huge medical cost tied to Medicare thanks to Reagan. A cost that DOGE can’t stop because it is law.
Ever wonder why your local hospital’s ER is full of people using it like a GP office? It is due to the EMTALA law passed in 1986. EMTALA, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, requires hospital emergency departments that accept payments from Medicare to provide an appropriate medical screening examination (MSE) for anyone seeking treatment for a medical condition regardless of citizenship, legal status, or ability to pay. Participating hospitals may not transfer or discharge patients needing emergency treatment except with the informed consent.
You read that right illegal aliens and foreign nationals can’t be turned away regardless of ability to pay.
DJT needs to get Congress to void or rewrite this law. ERs know ‘patients’ who abuse the ER due to this law. They call them frequent fliers. Imagine the ER at US hospitals that border Mexico. Mexicans can cross the border go to the ER and can’t be turned away.
There more than likely is much fraud in Medicare itself that the DOGE crew can find but until the EMTALA is voided, amended or changed to exclude illegal aliens and foreign nationals our ERs will continue to be abused with you and I paying for the cost.
Worst case scenario if it stands is you’ve got a 1 time cost of an ER visit followed by a deportation.
Legislatively, nothing is or was intended for non citizens. If there is “ambiguity” over this, while it’s being litigated the folks associated with facilitating the foreign nationals unlawful actions can be prosecuted.
