It is easy for Alex Behr to gush about her son, Eli, whom she describes as a generous and thoughtful college junior who had a serious skateboarding phase.
It is much harder for her to talk about his politics. Ms. Behr, 59, is a Democrat in Portland, Ore., who voted enthusiastically for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election. She and her ex-husband were appalled that Eli, 20, decided to cast his first vote in a presidential election this fall for Donald J. Trump.
When Eli brought a “Make America Great Again” hat home from college this summer, Ms. Behr threw it into the corner of his bedroom. They argued about guns, immigration and abortion, struggling to do so without permanently damaging their relationship.
“facts don’t matter to you,” Ms. Behr wrote in a moment of frustration during one text exchange about Mr. Trump’s legal battles. “love you. have a good day.”
A few months removed from Mr. Trump’s victory, the two have arrived at an impasse. Ms. Behr worries her son is being swayed by conservative opinions fed to him on YouTube and Instagram. Eli feels like he is simply learning to think for himself — a quality he admires in Mr. Trump.
“He’s not afraid to say what he thinks,” Eli said in an interview. “It seems like what he says is coming from him instead of coming from a big cabinet behind you, telling you what to say.”
Mr. Trump has for nearly a decade been a source of political divides within families, cleaving new fault lines along the way. In 2016, as younger voters leaned toward Hillary Clinton over Mr. Trump, it was easy to find left-leaning children loudly bemoaning the politics of their Trump-supporting parents, online and in the news.

Progressive parents suspect son isn’t gay.
‘We are devastated that he isn’t gay and since he isn’t it/they is probably homophobic”. The worry turned into a nightmare when their son introduced them to his girlfriend, and she was an actual trans trans man (female) but things went way out of control when he clearly and reasonably stated his reasons why he was voting for a PDJT.
The parents were quoted as saying “we raised our children to be normal and now we find out he is a heterosexual, with Nazi beliefs. He actually thinks hard work and diligently putting in effort will lead to success… success he said. We still have hope that he is unhoused, living in a tent, addicted to drugs and living without societal boundaries.”
Imagine our total shock when he mentioned that his promotion into a management position in banking. I was immediately ready to throw him out even if I am his father but my husband pointed out that it could be that he was just leading the block level freedom area, begging/groveling, tents, boxes, feces deposits … “.
We still have hope. The final comments the parents had were that “the cross representing pagan sacrifice around his neck gave us relief, since it clearly demonstrates his support of killing babies as early or late as wanted and we all know what else could that symbol imply. That and he said something about leading a revolutionary meetings or school on Sunday mornings at 9AM. We do hope he gets a chance to rest up quickly since those selfish sanctimonious nazis start going to lunch around 1230 on sundays and it’s the best time to sucker the rightwing haters out of money while standing in the median of busy intersections.”

I've never understood this issue. In early 2020, Trump wanted to ban TikTok, and Democrats were against it. Then, somehow, Democrats became for banning it? How di that flipflop happen?
Also, TikTok is not some bastion of conservativism, or Trump support. Quite the opposite.
Guess what Lefties...it can work the other way too. You celebrated when it was kids in the 60s generation who turned into Commies in opposition to their Conservative parents. Well youthful rebellion is just as glamorous and romantic and cool when they’re rebelling against you.
