If they stop making them it will be decades before we have a serious shortage of them. By then, one way or another, it simply won’t matter. There used to be half-pennies and it’s not like anyone struggles to make a transaction because we no longer have them. This is another example of a blazing obvious decision that just needs to be made to cut down on government waste.

The states actually didn't give themselves a choice to use pennies when they constitutionally mandated themselves to use only gold or silver coin for legal tender.
"Article I, Section 10 Clause 1: No State shall [all emphases added] enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility."
On the other hand, debit cards are practical imo. So in addition to getting rid of pennies and electing a new, Trump-supporting, Constitution-respecting Congress, the Constitution needs to be amended to allow the use of debit cards.
You are so right.
They should start making paper currency in larger denominations. Start with the $200 bill. In a couple years introduce the $500 bill.
It’s ridiculous to have the largest denomination be $100 when it now is worth what a $10 bill was worth in the 70s.
I did not know this! If cash registers routinely showed that half cent people would want that half penny. Get rid of the nickel too and you can simply shift the decimal over .
In the 90’s, in Okinawa, they didn’t use pennies on the military bases, just nickels.
They vendors would round up or down to five cents. It didn’t matter to us US troops.
There are billions of pennies in circulation, skipping a few years of minting is irrelevant!
