'Freaked out': Fear, uncertainty grip California's immigrant community as Trump rolls out crackdown plan

Leticia Jimenez expects to graduate from Cal State San Bernardino this spring with a degree in business administration.

She came to the country without authorization when she was 2 years old and grew up working the fields of the Coachella Valley with her parents when school was out.

She would be excited about the new opportunities her degree might present, but instead feels anxious every time she leaves the house. “I make sure that I say a good ‘goodbye’ to my parents,” she said. “I go out with more fear— anything can happen.”

Jimenez, 21, is like millions of undocumented immigrants living in California whose lives have become deeply woven into the state’s economy and social fabric — and who are rattled by the flurry of executive orders that President Trump has signed targeting immigrants.

When Jimenez does leave home, she said she always carries a red card detailing her rights under the U.S. Constitution — one in her wallet, one in her car and another in the back of her phone case.

“There’s a big chilling factor that’s going to emerge from this,” said Manuel Pastor, director of the Equity Research Institute at USC, who studies immigrants in the state. About 1 and 8 Californians are in the U.S. illegally or live with a family member who is. Most immigrants without legal status in the state, about 2.4 million people, have resided here for more than a decade, a factor that distinguishes California from other parts of the country.

A dramatic change in enforcement wouldn’t just affect undocumented people, Pastor said, but their family members who are “citizens or documented immigrant relatives.”

Those in California’s most immigrant-reliant industries — manufacturing, agriculture, hospitality, construction — are limiting their trips or staying home.

Illegal aliens are actually given preference for admission here in California.

They are considered “First Generation” and therefore have legal priority.

The Mexican government actually has college fairs for them where the schools send reps to get them on the list early.

American kids are considered dead last in the running and end up getting shunted off to places like CSUMB or CSUSB...to go to school with Leticia, AFTER she jumps the line in front of them.

Seriously.

WHy would anyone remotely think that illegally entering and living in another country should not be looking over their shoulder?

SO tired of this left wing nonsense.

Come legally, or get arrested, and deported period.

GOOD!

Go back home first. Then it won’t be a problem for you.

DACA children should have a different path than the millions who poured over the border the last four+ years.

Biden may have invited them, but they almost all lied on their request for asylum documents. They may come from a country with a corrupt government, which is keeping them from being prosperous, but their countries are not exactly the Soviet Union threatening to throw them into the Gulag.

Just in time: it means slightly lower property values and much lower freebies cost for many who need to rebuild.

What about the headline? "Freaked out: Fear and uncertainty grip US citizens as Biden brings in an illegal alien invasion of 15 million".

FULAT!

So why has she not yet applied for legal residency? I have a wonderful friend here who came to America LEGALLY and he is a wonderful and godly man.

Illegal aliens broke our laws and need to leave.

Legal immigrants are welcome.

The failure of the article to clearly distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants is irresponsible journalism. Shame on the authors, editors, and publishers of such rubbish. It’s like saying “the bank visitors are upset because the authorities are after them for making a withdrawal” when the facts are better defined by using the correct descriptive adjective.

“The law-breaking bank visitors are upset because the authorities are after them for making a law-breaking withdrawal. A witness saw them come in with masks, point guns at the teller, and then make a withdrawal that was undocumented because they didn’t use a withdrawal slip and instead just left quickly with a bag of cash.”

If Congress wants to let the DREAMers come back in then setup a visa program that allows for this from consulates which they can do on Visa Runs. Personally I’ve done plenty of Visa Runs and understand their value for ensuring that immigration laws are enforced. I think my country should do the same here in the USA.

Was listening to Mike Adam’s options for California the other day. I would not be surprised if secession / Civil War starts there. Then Gruesome calls for military help from China and it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Rise up state of New California!

Just in time: there are a lot of Altadenans — legal citizens and generational Angelenos — who are in desperate need of housing right now.
