I surfed Gilgo Beach before. I stayed the weekend on Long Island following a work trip years ago. Found out there was a bit of swell in the water, drove to the beach, met a local surf instructor named Pistol Pete, borrowed a longboard and paddled out. Small but fun summer waves. Good memories.

I can’t recall what the weather was like in the Northeast on Sunday but when I woke up this morning it was -1F. And the water off of Long Island would be damn cold right now.

“The article says that he drowned.”

.

Right. His limbs froze solid so that he couldn’t move anymore to swim, and then he sunk like a stone. Glug glug…

With a dry suit folks surf whenever there is a good break

Even the roaring 40s

I think some live to surf glacial ice floe drops and the huge waves those create

It wasn’t the decision to surf cold if prepared

It was something else

And a male’s testicles will be embedded in the adenoids.

Coldest water I ever encountered was at Lake Lewis (Fort Lewis) my freshman year in college. Plunged into the lake from a rope drop at 40 feet, water was less than 50 degrees. My body was not prepared for the shock. Had to be fished out by the lifeguard.

Had no problems after that, once I knew what to expect.

Going in the North Atlantic ocean or any part of it this time of the year will result in death from Hypothermia... And your swimming skills won’t help.

As a young man I surfed throughout the winter in the Rockaways, with few problems, but…..on an exceptionally warm February day I surfed without a hood, wiped out, was held down by a 6 footer, and when I came up I was blind and couldn’t feel my head. Sheer panic. In a few seconds my eyesight and feeling returned to my head and I paddled in. Didn’t go out again ‘till March. But the real danger is a kind of creeping hypothermia which sneaks up on you and gets you into a semi-sleeping state. At that point, you’d better do something or you’re done.

Right. His limbs froze solid so that he couldn’t move anymore to swim,...

You don't know that.

I know people who surf in 35 to 40 degree water all winter. They wear wet suits. They stay in the water for an hour or more.

Whatever went wrong, there aren't any life guards there to save you this time of year.
