Bo Jackson gives up $21M judgment in extortion suit against niece and nephew

MARIETTA, Ga. — Former professional football and baseball player Bo Jackson is giving up a $21 million judgment against his niece and nephew, whom he said harassed and tried to extort money from him.

A judge in February ruled in Jackson’s favor in the suit he had filed in April 2023 against Thomas Lee Anderson and Erica M. Anderson, also known as Erica Anderson Ross.

Jackson, a running back who won the Heisman Trophy at Auburn and also played in both the NFL and MLB, Jackson had alleged in his lawsuit that his relatives tried to extort $20 million from him through harassment and intimidation.

In addition to the monetary award, last year’s ruling included a permanent protective order barring his niece and nephew from bothering or contacting him and his immediate family.

It also said they must stay at least 500 yards (meters) from the Jacksons and remove social media posts about them.

Cobb County Superior Court Judge Jason D. Marbutt said in his February order that neither Jackson’s niece and nephew nor their attorneys rebutted Jackson’s claims or participated in the case after a May 2023 hearing, when they consented to a temporary protective order.

The judge found the Andersons to be in default, accepting as true all of Jackson’s allegations.

After that ruling was issued, a new lawyer for the Andersons filed a motion in March to set aside that judgment and to dismiss the lawsuit, according to court filings.

Makes for awkward family gatherings.

It would appear Mr Jackson has demonstrated forbearance. His relatives are another type.

Bo Jackson was in first class on one of my flights back in the day. It was after his sports retirement, beginning of business career. I found him to be a super nice, classy man.

Bo is a really great guy, everybody that I know that has spent time with him like him and speak well of him. These kin folks must be rotten eggs.

Bo rented a house a couple of homes down my dad's. He would throw the football around with the kids that lived on the same street. He is a great guy.

"Great runner."

But wait - there's more.

Saw Bo Jackson crank a home run off Roger Clemens at Fenway - so he only had to jog for that one.

Probably the greatest athlete in American history, but doing too much cut his career short by a decade.

Thorpe could run, but could he throw or hit a ball?
There is an actual debate about the two.

Guy does something good with his life but because now he has money out crawl the snakes.

I’m glad the judge saw through it.

Sorry for what you went through. Bo. Hope things go well for you now.

neither Jackson’s niece and nephew nor their attorneys rebutted Jackson’s claims or participated in the case after a May 2023

Unusual (and dangerous) for the attorney to ghost on a case. Even if the lawyer isn't getting paid, s/he should file to withdraw.

But I wouldn't want to draw any conclusions based on an AP story.

War Eagle! When we lived in Kansas City, he lived in the neighborhood next to ours. We used to sit on 3rd base side of the Royal baseball stadium to watch him play. He is such a genuinely nice person.

I don’t think he actually lives in Auburn, but he is here frequently. I have never met him, although my brother has as well as my late sister-in-law. They like him very much.

I feel for him. There are a couple people I am related to who really showed their true colors - ie really nasty, bitter, ugly, and hateful - as soon as it came to inheritance/money issues. Its sad but some people are like that. I think a lot of us have seen that and can relate to him in wanting nothing to do with those two.
