Wyden introduces bill to end Cuba embargo, establish normal trade relations
Wyden press release via MyBasin.com ^ | January 17,2025 | Wyden

Posted on 01/17/2025 1:06:56 PM PST by Rio

Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today introduced the U.S.-Cuba Trade Act of 2025 to repeal sanctions on Cuba and establish normal trade relations with the island nation.

Wyden introduced the bill after the Biden White House announced this week it was removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and Cuba agreed to free a number of political prisoners. Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., co-sponsored the legislation.

The U.S.-Cuba Trade Act would repeal the major statutes that codify sanctions against Cuba, including the Helms-Burton Act and the Cuban Democracy Act, as well as other provisions that impact trade, investment, and travel with Cuba. It would also establish normal trade relations with the country. The International Trade Commission found in 2016 that easing U.S. restrictions on trade and business with Cuba could increase U.S. exports by $1.4 billion annually in the next five years, with even bigger gains possible.

The bill text is available here.

Cuba could be a great place. Tremendous investment opportunity. But it needs to totally reject Collectivism of any kind.

Their biggest trading partner now is China.

With the Soviet Union gone for 34 years now, the raison d’être for this declared enemy is wearing thin. Has anyone put an annual dollar cost on this pointless foreign entanglement?

As a kid growing up in Florida, Havana was the place to go. Imagine what Havana would look like now if Communism had never arrived.

That is so hard to believe. When we lived in Guantanamo Bay, we would sit outside at night overlooking the bay (we were out there to watch movies outdoors at the Chief's Club) and in the fall, they would burn the old sugar cane crops, making way for the spring growth. The sky was red with the reflection of the flames.

I seem to recall they had problems with the harvest. They also have struggled to keep electrical power on in the socialist paradise.

I remember an old OLD political cartoon from the 1960s with Nikita Khrushchev of the USSR trading with Cuba. He is setting at a desk with a cup of coffee held out.
Castro is filling the cup with so much sugar from a 50 lb sack that it overflows the coffee and is almost up to Khrushchev’s knees. Wonder how that would work out today.
