Newsweek ^ | 1/17/25 | Hatty Wilmoth

Pizza is the United States' favorite junk food, hitting top spot in 37 out of 50 states, but nutrition experts say it doesn't have to be an unhealthy choice.

"Pizza can be a balanced meal if prepared with wholesome ingredients," Amani Kaite, lecturer at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, told Newsweek.

"It can provide high-quality protein from toppings like chicken or salmon, calcium from fresh cheese, antioxidants such as lycopene from fresh tomato sauce and fiber from wholegrain crusts and vegetables.

"Vegetable toppings, such as spinach, mushrooms and peppers also add vitamins A and C, magnesium and potassium, which support immunity and heart health."

There’s no good inexpensive pizza in the Huntsville, AL area.

It’s either cheap and bad, or good but expensive.

From the article: “Registered dietitian Melanie Marcus, of Dole Food Company, told Newsweek: “For a healthier slice, opt for a thin crust, wholegrain dough and plenty of veggies while skipping the double meat and cheese options.”

That has a somewhat lefty slant to it. I bet at home she replaces the meat with tofu served by her emasculated husband wearing his jammies.

Meat and cheese are what makes any pizza great.

Mushrooms, peppers and onions are very popular on pizza in northern Illinois where I lived most of my life -— lots of real Italians operating mom and pop pizza stores.

Hamburgers are junk food either. Obviously the list is made up by tofu swilling vegan nutzos.

almost every state is chili or pizza.

sorry, i might’ve had one helping of chili in the last year and maybe pizza for dinner 8 or 9 times.

Chick-Fil-A nuggets are prolly far more popular...

Chilli is junk food? This article is too cliche for consumption.

No way is pizza a junk food. Candy bars, jelly beans, potato chips, yeah - and I love them all - but pizza, nope.
