A bill endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump that would enact nationwide reciprocity for any state-issued concealed carry permit has been introduced in the House of Representatives.
As reported by Just The News, the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act was authored by Congressman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.). If passed, the bill would amend title 18 in the United States Code to allow anyone with a concealed carry permit in one state to carry their weapons in any other state.
“Our Second Amendment right does not disappear when we cross invisible state lines, and this commonsense legislation guarantees that,” said Hudson in a statement. “The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act will protect law-abiding citizens’ rights to conceal carry and travel freely between states without worrying about conflicting state codes or onerous civil suits.”
As of Thursday, the bill has 124 co-sponsors, all of whom are Republicans. President-elect Trump has vowed to sign the bill into law if it is first passed by Congress. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers, with 219 seats in the House and 53 seats in the Senate.
The bill has also been endorsed by Gun Owners of America, the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action.
The question of concealed carry reciprocity is also being litigated in court. The Texas-based Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit in a Minnesota federal court on behalf of two truckers who are licensed to carry firearms in Texas, as the state of Minnesota does not recognize concealed carry permits from other states.
Sadly there will be a few RINOs that vote against this.
Soooo, how does that work if you come from a constitutional carry state? Not that I don’t want it, just wondering.
Does that state also have a permit available for concealed carry?
This seems to hinge on the federal background check for that.
Personally, I would prefer that they remove all restrictions rather than add new permissions. I don’t need permission to protect myself or anyone else.
BUMP. The right to my life and the necessary corollary, the right to protect my life.
A step towards finally getting rid of infringements on fundamental civil rights
—if passed, it will set off some interesting legal battles as Cali, NY, etc., will refuse to honor—
If this passes, I’m thinking that a Blue state like MA, will pass their own law that reaffirms no reciprocity with other states. If an arrest is made in MA and a court case ensues, is MA in violation of Fed law? Possibly...but then there’s the 10th amendment. It will be interesting.
I agree. This sounds like a sneaky way to register CCW people under they guise of doing us a favor. The government seems to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to restrict law abiding citizens while ignoring those committing crimes.
If you live in a CC state, you still need to get a concealed carry permit to be covered in a reciprocity state.
wholeheartedly agree with your take on this. “The only restriction written into the Second Amendment is a restriction on legislating restrictions” L.Star
I don’t see anything changing here in Illinois. States’ rights, just like abortion.
They democrap constitution says interstate reciprocity only applies to driver’s licences and gay marriage.
I wish just the 2nd amendment was enough without license and such. The Fed government forcing a state to honor the permits of another state in general makes me uneasy. We’ll see how it all shakes out
“The government seems to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to restrict law abiding citizens while ignoring those commiting crimes.”
That is the premise behind “prison reform”....allowing 49 page Rap Sheet Johnnie to roam the streets.
IF this passes...great, but don’t forget that castle laws and how DAs handle self defense vary wildly across the country.
What would be a perfectly legal shoot in self defense while some dude is threatening to mug you in Texas....and have you walking out of the sheriffs office Scott-free a couple hours later....will have you fighting criminal charges in New York for the next three years.
The Blue state DAs will want to make absolute examples out of CC Weapon holders coming into their states and using them in self defense.
There’s the full faith and credit clause in the Constitution.
Before SCOTUS found a right to same sex marriage a gay couple could go to, say, California and get married. They were then married anywhere in the country they went.
At least that was the argument back then.
If you have a state issued license, you are on file with the FBI already, along with your fingerprints. The background check for the license is completed by the FBI, supposed to insure that there are no outstanding warrants or problems in other states.
I renewed mine about 5 months before CC went into effect knowing it was coming but didn’t want to be w/o it for that period. I checked with the local sheriff’s dept and they said the state still issues permits as long as you take the course ahead of time and exhibit proficiency so I guess that answers that. They said it also lowers the time it takes to get another weapon as far as background checks etc.
learn a little something every day.
