American Sign Language is more than just hand gestures, it incorporates facial expressions to form the signs as well.
It probably doesn’t sound nice to say, but when watching a live press conference, I generally find those Signers an unwanted distraction from the speaker. I understand that they perform a valuable service to the deaf.
I may be wrong but I think much of it is.performance bulls***.

Just project the news as text. Deaf people are going to have a difficult time to know if they are watching a real time announcement anyway. The signage doesn’t need to be real time....only people who know sign language will know if the signer is correctly translating the speech anyway...

it takes all the focus off what the person is actually saying...and it should be stopped. it is RIDICULOUS.
There are non-manual markers that are essential to ASL. Without ASL many deaf folks would be relegated to second class status.
Yes. It’s very painful to watch. It would be interesting to know how many deaf people actually rely on sighing or if this is just theater. I’m not deaf but usually have captions on.
Why are they there to begin with when there’s CC on TV? They look like idiots and I’m guessing it’s nothing more than look at me requirements... They’d need signers for every language if they did it right.

That one signer yesterday looked like he was doing his long, masturbation routine. What a moron. He wasn’t signing. He was doing his comedy routine.

There was a clip yesterday on Fox that was an absolute clown show. The pierced pony tailed signer looked like he was on crack twitching and flailing through the news conference. It was so distracting I don't even remember what the conference was about.
My question is how big is the budget for signers? There is always a different person.
I would like a deaf person to watch the signer only part of the video, and write a transcript.
Maybe have more than one.
I watch the speaker, then the signers, and maybe get some hint of correlation 1% of the time. But, I’m not deaf so probably not qalified.
