I've always thought that was ridiculous. No matter where you go in the world, people will call USians 'Americans'; and if you say 'I'm American' they have no confusion at all as to what country you are from.
I doubt very much that South Americans routinely call themselves 'American'. They will say they are Peruvian, Argentinian, Brazilian, etc.

Our Founding Fathers bequeathed that name to us. There has been a move for a time to apply it to everyone.
Just another attempt to rob Americans of their identity.
A school official told me that when Common Core was adopted, they had to change “American history” to “United States history.” Can’t have that “American” word around, it is an identity.
