These adorable critters are totally illegal in California

Axolotls, or Ambystoma mexicanum, are the new superstars of the amphibian world.

These salamanders are native to a single lake in Mexico City, Lake Xochimilco, and are famous for their smiling appearance and incredible ability to regrow lost body parts.

California has fairly strict rules to protect local ecosystems and prevent non-native species from causing havoc.

“If released into the wild, axolotls have the potential to easily outcompete already struggling native salamander species, such as the California tiger salamander and the Eastern tiger salamander,” Axolotl Central points out.

For those who can legally keep them as pets, they’re considered to be low-maintenance with engaging personalities.

They do realize that the reason for dwindling salamander populations is due to California’s ridiculous environmental policies.

Have you tried registering or certifying one as an emotional support animal?

Yes. I haven’t heard of this being real popular, though.

(Having kept an aquatic turtle for a long, long time, I don’t think I want any more aquariums. I’ll appreciate it in photos.)

Pretty much the whole summer, bear in mind deer for example get a whiff of it and they won’t be back. We have some taller flowers and some fruit trees as the summer carries on that beg for more attention but it could be superstition. Pretty effective from keeping chipmunks, groundhogs and the like that burrow in your cinderblock that could cause major harm, the cool thing about making you own spray from peppers is that the capsaicin does not affect birds. Have never seen a salamander of any kind around here so there’s that.

They tell you to put hot pepper powder in the bird feeder with your birdseed to discourage the squirrels.

The ‘engaging personality’ is probably mostly in the mind of the observer.

If you actually find yourself engaging with the personality of a Salamander you should seek a Mental Health Professional.

Salamander, I guess this means it's over between us.

I'll see you again if they ever let me out of this spinbin...

With one exception, she's OK.

They’re just waterdogs, which are sold in other parts of the country as bait.

Yep.

If you can not live without the critter move to where it is not an invasive species and you can have it.

Invasive plants are a big problem in my area. English Ivy may make your house look cool but in the wild it smothers trees. (harmoniously of course) I know you have the same problem in your area with kudzu.

That is not even considering all the little nasties they can bring in with them.

I bought those Sea-Monkeys back around 1960 or so after seeing that ad in a comic box. Turns out they were about the size of fleas.
