In 1978, the Carter administration made a deal with General Omar Torrijos, the uniformed socialist strongman who had seized power in Panama, to abandon America’s crown jewel.
The Panama Canal had been built with over a decade of labor and half a billion of early twentieth century dollars by American engineers and visionaries who succeeded where the British and the French had failed, in the process they created a new country, Panama, and new trade routes.
Jimmy Carter had run for office promising to oppose a surrender of the canal. As with most of his policies, he turned out to have been lying.

One wonders if the Chinese have booby trapped the physical infrastructure, or mined the entrances. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they had.
Well, okay, he did do all that... but then he pretended to build a few houses and give them away with cameras rolling. That makes everything okay.
He didn’t even do that; afaik, the homes are not given away, they’re awarded to struggling families who must qualify and be able to pay for a mortgage on the home.
I think they have to live there 5 years...then they can sell them and make a HUGE profit. That’s what they did in our area.
Ah.
Dismal Jimmah was a real POS in spite of the hagiographical spew that’s been defecated forth from the various orifices of Democrat media and politicians recently.
There are plenty of Caesars from Brazil. I know because one of them owns the house next to mine.
It’s my understanding the canal was turned over via a contract, a contract that has now been violated numerous times. So, is it even theirs? It appears they were custodians by contract.
I don’t have the contract details...what I’ve read elsewhere.
“Take over the country by installing a favorable government, and then no force is necessary”
We did that in 1990.
Then we elected three democrat presidents.
A leading opponent of the Canal giveaway in 1977 was Dan Flood, Pennsylvania democrat congressman and then powerful Chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
Carter then used lawfare to go after the fellow democrat to get him indicted for trivial offenses and force him to leave Congress.
Lawfare against Trump is not new.
It’s always been a democrat tool.
Don’t forget that [Carter] withdrew support for Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (the Shah of Iran), opening the door for what the world has had to endure for the the last 40 years.”

That includes dead victims and living wounded...
My father’s uncle was one of the engineers on the Canal. His wife was with him in Panama. She died there of spinal meningitis. My father wasn’t alive to see the Chinese taking control of it. He would have been livid.
I’m glad my parents are no longer alive to see what is happening to this country with the Communists destroying everything they can lay their hands on. I grew up in the 50s and remember very well the horrible 1960s. This era under Democrat rule and Republican cowardice is much worse.
There are more than one new routes being considered. Mexico is studying one that would off load the containers onto a train, move them by train to the other coast, then reload them onto another container ship. But those ships are huge and carry lots and lots of containers. Seems like unloading and reloading would eat up all of the benefits.
I would think complete automation at both ports would make that process quite efficient. This would be especially so if the overland routes could be improved to the southern border.
That would maximize how much organized crime could steal along the way. LOL.
Mexico is improving the rail lines between the two oceans as a part of the project.
The wording of the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty stated that “the Republic of Panama grants to the United States in perpetuity, the use, occupation and control of a zone of land and land under water for the construction, maintenance, operation, sanitation and protection of said Canal.”
An excellent Greenfield article that I missed earlier.
