Moon Occultation of Mars - I’ll try to watch it. hampered by trees, but fortunately, without leaves this time of year. As long as the sky cooperates.
The First Peoples also enslaved people, only each other. After the Colonizers arrived, they would sometimes enslave them.
I read that a Viking presence was found someplace further west, on mainland US. A stone with runes on it or something. Maybe Vikings impressed men? I could easily be wrong. Of course they also settled in parts of England and iirc Normandy.
Thanks for all the pings!
I could be fuller of krapola than the pachyderm house at the zoo, but IIRC, I read something years and years ago about a Viking rune stone being discovered in Minnesota?
In Alexandria Minnesota museum . . .
The Vikings trekked from Greenland through Canada down in to
what is now Minnesota . . . It is theorized they were a well organized expedition that finally ran out of resources and all died off in west central Minnesota . . . An amazing story of exploration and survival...

Yes, I’ve also heard about the rune stone in Minnesota, but don’t know much about it. I’m also a total “Curse of Oak Island” nerd and they have found some Viking items, most recently an iron arrowhead. Latest theory is that Vikings traveled to the Holy Land with the Crusaders.
😁
My dad’s YDNA traced back to western Norway, (modern) Germany, then Scotland. Maybe we descended from Rollo!

I can share some of that krapola. Way back in my American History class the perfessor did a long segment on early traffic up the St Lawrence, portage over the falls, and loop west bound over the Great Lakes to the upper mid west. Evidence for that traffic goes way back. That class was probly before your Rune stone was discovered but another thing that has developed is that known Viking objects have been found to have metal from the Mesabi range area. And the Vikings had canoes way back. Nobody else could have done it any better. And there’s Viking settlement evidence in Newfoundland. Over a few hunnert years they easily could have sent out more scouts. One wouldn’t want to discount the possibility, at least? My biggest curiousity is why did they pull back? Happened a lot to early peoples. Happening in LA right now-——
No joke, the garbage truck that Trump rode to a rally will be in the 2025 Inaugural Parade 😂✊https://t.co/oUch7i5dfn— Not the Bee (@Not_the_Bee) January 13, 2025
That iron arrowhead the Oak Island guys found is way past fascinating. They don’t seem to understand how difficult that thing is to make. Not to mention refining the iron enough to make it strong. Starting from scratch, even with my shop capability, it would take me a week to make the first one. It, in my view anyway, is another example of some way back lost manufacturing capability.
Probly another example of somebody’s Mom giving away the guy’s tools?
Or the lip reader got that word wrong (foy)?
The moon’s position will move towards mars tonight, with the expected start of the event between 20:50 and 21:20 hrs tonight, eastern standard time. I’m going to go out and take a peek at it after I post this, and probably set up my smaller “grab-and-go” 80 mm telescope. It’s a handy little thing.
I spotted Mars last night with the telescope but I had some ice on the deck so I didn’t stay out long (deck freezes before ground, just like a bridge). I shoveled off most of the surface and it was warmer today so the ice is pretty much gone.
I have pretty clear skies so I ought to get a look.
Happy Anniversary!
