Americans under age 55 have no memory of Carter's presidency. They won't care enough to mourn. Americans older than that probably only remember the problems of his term in office. They won't mourn him either.

Yeah, he served in uniform and he did good works in his later life. But he was overall a lousy president and his politics then and after were terrible IMO.

May his generally well-intentioned but woefully misguided soul rest in peace. I'm glad he's no longer consuming oxygen, so I'll skip mourning also.

Tonight at dinner my daughter (27) was asking what was so bad about Carter. Extended family regaled her with stories of gas lines, flags at the gas stations showing if they had gas or not, odd-even gas days, 55 MPH maximum, interest rates of 18% and more for a house, etc. Iran hostages, etc.

After listening to it all she said “Sounds like he helped elect Reagan - so that was good!”

“Americans older than that probably only remember the problems of his term in office.”

I remember sitting at the neighbor lady’s fabulous old house overlooking the harbor on Long Island. She was married to a finance guy. I was there to babysit her kids

She was from Italy, escaped the Mussolini reign as a child with her family. She looked like Audrey Hepburn and smoked like a chimney.

She had been a diplomat, had a post at the UN.

She would get on a Jimmy Carter rant. ‘The man is inept!’

All these years later, nothing to add

Bless his soul.

Agree. Many conservatives are sad for 2 reason, one you mentioned they don’t remember his many faults.

IMO the other is Carter was a man of his times like most are. In his time the USA was a far more conservative nation than today..for his time he was quite liberal/left.

I don’t think he was well-intentioned. Recall during Rmoney’s campaign for POTUS, he made a comment about 47% of the populace won’t vote for you no matter what.

That was recorded surreptitiously (I think by Carter’s nephew) and leaked to the media.

Carter and said nephew gloated about it.

During the Carter presidency I realized you do not necessarily want a nice guy goodie two shoe as president.

The rest of us know enough to celebrate.
