Fewer people are watching the NBA than in previous years, including some of the sport's top names.
Ratings for NBA games on ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV are down 25% through Saturday, according to Sports Media Watch, and there are many ideas floating about why.
Three-pointer propensity and lack of defense are the two main bugaboos observers point to.
And it's become clear that players rest more often than they used to and that the regular season has been watered down in recent years.
Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was asked about the declining ratings, and one would think the coach of the reigning champions would defend his game. But that was not the case.

Completely mimics the lawlessness of criminal-class politicians, judges, and governmental officials.
Turning the ball over violations per game? I bet at least 40 of them, on average.
LeBron running his arrogant mouth and his party buddy, Diddy.
Steph Curry saying his supreme interest is protecting abortion.
Yeah, hard pass.
Many of the younger stars are now European.
Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić.
Too foreign for the American audience.
I worked photographing sports at the lower college divisions, some D1 and occasionally the pro level. For 14 years. I would attend several hundred games in a calendar year.
If you asked me to watch sports on TV during that time, I would ask you if you wanted to go hang out in your office/factory for fun?
The NBA is this guy’s life. Perhaps he has other things to do on his time off?
Good point. It's his job.
That said, the NBA is a bad product right now.
It was not the case when Bird and Magic were playing. Then Jordan.
I am a Celtics fan, and have been for my entire life.
The crew playing for them now is perhaps the best “team” they have had in 40 years. There isn’t a lot of drama. They certainly have adopted the Red Auerbach ethos of winning over individual performance. They seem to be having “fun” which is not something you see a lot of. They also seem to like each other.
And their coach (Mazzula) is kind of an odd ball. Which is fun.
The drama on and off the court for the league in whole is tedious.
But I understand how people are tired of it all. Lots of money and not a lot of “joy.” And the black culture part of it is not something I can relate to a lot.
I haven’t seen anyone “kneel” in the league for a couple of years.
The University of Illinois is starting three Eastern Europeans.
The “hood” ain’t producing the “disciplined” athletes required to excel in a team sport.
They're a great team. They won a championship. But a big part of the problem is that the NBA is a "solved game".
So what you do is that you have all shooters make their 3's. You are not going to do a different strategy such as making mid-range jumpers. That is terribly inefficient because you will only get 2 points from those shots.
Even Nikola Jokić is making 3 point shots.
It's a bad experience if you're a fan watching the game.
This more than anything. True with football as well. At some point these sports decided to stop advertising to and appealing to their bread and butter...older males who were often white and conservative. They made a conscious decision to embrace and try to appeal to the ghetto culture.
I agree. It can get frustrating.
Fast break down the court, then they stop and pop a 3. The 3 point shot is killing the NBA. Boring...
Exactly. I’ve seen some videos that have suggested getting rid of the 3 line, or moving it back and align it with the free throw line on the sides.
It’s disgusting to watch a center pop 3’s all day long and have no post game.
I may have a solution. Each team gets ten 3 pt attempts per quarter. If you're above the limit, it's a technical foul.
I work in a 98% minority job and they all say that the game is more boring.
NBA needs to adapt or they will die. They did all they could to run off white fans and now the blacks are bored.
The NBA is huge in China. Also, S.F. has a big Asian-American Community and the Golden State Warriors are popular in that city.
That would work too.
Coaches used to look great when they wore their suits. Now they're in their leisure attire, it's difficult to distinguish them from athletic trainers.
It's a big mistake for the NBA to permit casual dress. It's supposed to be a prestigious organizational. They still wear suits in the NHL and they look more professional.
Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić.
Luka was just traded to the Lakers.
