Do You Dress Like An American Tourist Abroad? These Signs Are A Dead Giveaway.
HuffPost ^ | Dec 12, 2024 | Jillian Wilson

If you’ve ever seen the iconic “Modern Family” clip where Mitchell is increasingly bothered that people in France know he’s American just by looking at him — that is, until he purchases an outfit from a local store and fits in with the locals — you’ll understand the plight of American tourists. Sometimes, even with the right language skills or a demure presence, our clothes alone give us away.

This is because Americans have a specific way of dressing, stylists say, whether they’re visiting Europe, Asia or another locale. And while fashion is different in every city and every country (and among different groups in said place), Americans still manage to stick out no matter where they are.

Below, stylists from around the world share the styles that make Americans stand out from locals and how to dress like an international traveler instead.

Wearing Athletic Wear

Being Too Dressy

Having Perfect Makeup And Hair

Wearing Too Many Logos

Dressing Too Beachy

Don’t be afraid to try out new styles and get inspiration from the world around you

I suspect most Thai WILL be able to detect that an American in Thailand is not a native. Regardless of clothing. Maybe 98% true...

Liberals weirdly think eurinals are the height of sophistication and elegance and would give anything to be like them.

I'm good with being American and find that, while abroad, looking like an American will get you better service, since you're the only one in the room who's going to tip.

Hell, I had a XO wear both of those with plaid gold shorts in Naples years ago. A complete moron.

We’re on a cruise now. We had lunch in St. Maarten a couple days ago and I was wearing my Trump hat. The owner noticed right away and said that the people there were so glad that Trump won the election.

We’ve met others on the ship who are MAGA. The most knowledgeable was a woman from Canada. She knows as much about him and the election than we on FR do. She LOVES Trump.

Avoid the backwards baseball cap, too.

That looks so ridiculous on a grown man...

I saw a “Coney Island Beach Club, Malibu” sweatshirt on a Spaniard in Madrid.

One thing I never did.

I’ve always tried hard to protect my nose from the sun. With my blue eyes and light skin from ancestors in Britain, Scotland, Ireland and Wales I have to work on that. Backwards doesn’t do it.

Everyone should have to post a full length selfie before posting about fashion trends for plains apes.

Which makes you wonder why so many guys wear flip flops, baggy shorts, and t-shirts.

I can't explain the flip-flops.

The baggy pants make it easier to concealed carry.

The overhanging loose t-shirt covers the butt (of both you and the gun). It's also easy to sweep aside to draw.

Welcome to Nevada...

In all the times I've been to Europe, I've never seen an American wear a Yankees hat. But I've seen plenty of foreigners wear them.

The Americans will be the ones who keep them on when they're eating.

Nothing adds to the ambiance of the Champs-Élysées like the site of someone wearing a baseball hat and eating a baguette at an outside table at one of the cafés.

As long as they’re not wearing them inside, like so many Americans do...

A gentleman removing his hat as he enters an establishment is one of the finer points of civilization we’ve sadly lost.

I don’t go any where if I can’t pack iron.

In the advanced countries, a sidearm isn't the necessity it often is here.

as my weight has dropped from 175 to 150 over the past few months…diabetes the likely culprit.

Hey! That's how I lost 30 lbs.

I don't reccomend it or cancer (good for another 30 lb loss) as a weight loss program...

Exactly. Why put a target on your back? Even domestically.

Let’s be realistic here. An easier way to tell is that us Americans are about 50 to 100 lb heavier than everybody else!
