Sources: Belichick, UNC work on issues before potential hire

North Carolina is working to close a deal with Bill Belichick to make the six-time Super Bowl champion the Tar Heels' coach, but sources told ESPN there are still issues that both sides need to work through.

Sources added that the "ball is in Belichick's court" and that North Carolina officials are on board with him becoming the coach. A resolution is expected in the near future, sources said.

Among the issues are the potential role for his son and current Washington defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick; North Carolina's name, image and likeness resources; Belichick's salary, and resources for the staff and reporting structure.

Talks between North Carolina and Belichick have been ongoing since at least last week, sources said. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Belichick met with North Carolina officials for five hours Sunday.

Belichick was typically coy about the situation in an interview on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Monday afternoon. He confirmed to McAfee that he had a "couple of good conversations" with North Carolina chancellor Lee Roberts and said, "We'll see how that goes." He concluded the interview by saying about the UNC job: "We'll see. We'll see."

Bill Belichick is too old. He should be playing golf instead.

I’ve read that no NFL team will hire him...don’t know if it’s true. But UNC? Good God...he can’t need the money!

He could probably get a job with an NFL. Last year, the owner oft he Atlanta Falcons wanted to hire him, but his staff convinced him not to. There has been a lot of speculation that many teams will be interested.

Kyle Shanahan, the coach of the 49ers, claimed he offered him the Defensive Coordinator position, but I doubt that is true.

Hard to imagine him accepting anything but head coach.

He will be 73 when next football season starts.

If he attracts some elite players and elite assistant coaches, it might be worth throwing the dice on hiring him.

Bad idea, if he hires his son.

Hey.. Belichick gets to be the author of his own life. If this is what he wants, more power to him. I will not sit in judgement as I wish no one to sit in judgement of my decisions. I’ll be rooting for him.

It’s worth a shot. It would be nice to see a national championship team come from a different school besides all the usual contenders.

I don’t know if he would accept it, but what coach in their right minD would make him a DC, knowing the owner could decide to elevate him at any time?

Says Belichick: It is a great help to have a cheerleader sit on my lap and call me daddy while I plan out my strategies.

The NFL has passed him by- Belichick is a HOF coach, perhaps the greatest ever considering he won all those titles in the day and age of salary cap football and unfettered free agency. But he wants to be the coach, GM and have total control over the roster- which he was increasingly less effective in his later years with the Pats.

The hold up is he wants guarantees for his son- that was part of the issue with the Patriots on his way out.

No NFL team would hire him, except maybe the Panthers, and he would never gel with that owner.
