The Archer Daniels Midland wet mill on the outskirts of Decatur, Ill., rises like an industrial behemoth from the frozen, harvested cornfields of Central Illinois. Steam billowed in the 20-degree cold last week, as workers turned raw corn into sweet, ubiquitous high-fructose corn syrup. Three miles away, a Primient mill, which sprawls across 400 acres divided by North 22nd Street, was doing the same.

Trump’s nominee for secretary of health and human services, this bedraggled city — set deep in Trump country — is the belly of the agribusiness beast, churning out products that he says poison America, rendering its children obese and its citizens chronically ill......
“It’d have a huge impact,” a 37-year-old electrician who would identify himself by only his first name, Tyler, said of Mr. Kennedy’s declaration of war on corn syrup and corn oil. He was grabbing lunch at Debbie’s Diner in the shadow of the mills. “That shuts down Central Illinois, if A.D.M. shuts down.”
Mr. Kennedy’s other track record — on environmental protection and an abiding hatred of America’s unhealthy diet — may have been less of a draw to the fast-food-loving, regulation-hating Mr. Trump, but the former and future president said he would keep Mr. Kennedy’s environmentalism in check while letting him “go wild” on health.

Generous federal crop subsidies of soy, corn and wheat artificially lower their costs, making byproducts like corn syrup cheaper for manufacturers who put it into everything from soft drinks to hot dogs to heavily processed bread. Crop engineering has made American grains more resilient to drought and pests but rendered them “nutrient barren,” he says, and farming practices have loaded grains with pesticides.

It’s not what you eat but what you cut out.
No sweets no alcohol no potatoes. No fruit juice or fruit dishes.
No “other” carbs, oats, etc.
No more than 2 slices of bread Or 2 small cups of rice daily. ONE (1) actual fruit, apple banana whatever.
Unlimited meat, cheese, eggs, veg.

If you don’t mind me asking, did the weight loss and different eating bring the Type 2 under control?
They're not fat because food is cheap.
They're fat because they eat crap like HFCS, hydrongenated oils, and super refined carbs that have had all the nutritional value stripped out of them by processing, and don't get out and move any more.
We can eat lots better and still eat cheap.
There have to be other crops besides corn for the farmers to grow.

For a while. A1c was down to under 6, for a few years there, then started rising again. I have to be very strict now. Testing blood 2-3 times a day and upgraded meds beyond metformin.
I have to disagree about the oats.
Many years ago, before these food sensitivities really got me, I went on a wheat free diet and the weight fell off.
I ate any other carbs I wants, including rice, oats and popcorn (with lots of butter and salt), and STILL lost that weight.
What I did eat was protein, veggies, nuts, fruits, and at the end of each day, my treat to myself was a granola bar with chocolate chips in it and a glass of milk.
And even with that, the weight loss was dramatic.
But fait warning. Cutting out all wheat is NOT easy. It wasn't the pies and pastries that were the toughest to avoid, but pizza and a nice crusty, but soft, fresh, still warm loaf of Italian bread.
Since then, my food sensitivities have gotten more extensive and now I eat LOTS of oats as that is almost the only food I can tolerate in any appreciable amount, and when I made the switch to oats, I again lost weight and have kept it off. Nobody will get fat eating low glycemic oats. Promise.
Additionally, oats are HIGLY nutritious. Not complete nutrition but surprisingly more so than most grains.
But another suggestion I have is to avoid Quaker oats if possible and find a health food store that sells organic oats for a reasonable cost. There's a food co-op in our area that sells organic oats for $1.99/pound, which is not a lot more than store bought Quaker Oats or the store brands.
My worst problem is going out in Spain. Restaurant-cafe going is a huge social deal - and there is s bar on every corner. I have to be diplomatic. Such food restrictions can seem eccentric here.
The best thing would be an officially welcoming approach toward small scale community farms across the country.... financial help if needed, and a rebirth of awareness of healthful foods and the local spirit that could and should grow with this new horizon...STOP the buying up of farmland by the likes of Bill Gates and China and whatever other interests that think they have a right to exert hegemony over our food supply.
Why is there a war on HFCS and not on honey?
Sugar, aka sucrose, is broken down to about 50% fructose and 50% glucose
Honey is about 43% glucose and 50% fructose
HFCS 42 (used in baked goods/processed foods) is about 50% glucose and 42% fructose
HFCS 55 (used in sodas) is about 42% glucose and 55% fructose
in each case, the liver breaks down the fructose. In all cases, moderation of any choice is the key.

Agree. I'm getting tired of hearing "the economy will collapse" if we stop allowing poison in our food or we kick out all the illegal aliens. Most of the rest of the world manages to keep ultra processed garbage out of the food supply without their economy collapsing. They also manage to pick their own lettuce and still afford it. I don't care if lettuce costs a few bucks more a head if we stop looking the other way over the 50 million illegals in our country. Pay the extra $2 a head, the money we save from cheap labor costs us 100X more when we pay for the crime, welfare, and anchor babies that go along with that cheap lettuce.
Sugar is not good overall but it is better than corn syrup.

What does this have to do with liberals? AMERICANS right or left love their sugary, fried, and fatty foods.
Weaning them off those foods (as RFK Jr. wants) will require massive government intervention which will raise consumer prices and eliminate jobs.

My local paper says the economy will collapse if we deport the illegals. We won’t be able to feed ourselves or build anything.
I’ve some stores like Walmart carried Pepsi from Mexico it was made with sugar.
It’s a hit or miss they don’t have it all the time maybe local dealers involved of banning it due to sales?.
