The collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government marks the end of a nearly 54-year dynasty that began in 1971 under his father, Hafez al-Assad.
Assad’s ouster would end his 24-year iron rule and the 54-year Assad family dynasty, which began with his father, Hafez Assad, in 1971. Bashar Assad took power in 2000 following his father’s death and struggled for 13 years to maintain control during a brutal civil war that devastated the nation.
"After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and (forced) displacement... we announce today the end of this dark period and the start of a new era for Syria," the rebel factions said on Telegram.
Under Assad, Syria’s Alawite minority maintained dominance in a predominantly Sunni Muslim nation, while the country became a critical ally of Iran, remaining hostile toward Israel and the United States.

Yeah Cubans were really thrilled when they got rid of that bastard Bautista. How did it work out for them?
New chapter for Syria. This is what Obama wanted by fueling the civil war. Only the side that he was supporting also supported ISIS. I wonder what will become of the remaining Christians in Syria.
Get ready for a Sunni Wahabbist paradise. The days of Syrian women dancing on Latakia beach, drinking Syrian wine, and going back on monday to a job they chose are over.
That's typical in mid Eastern countries where unfortunately dictatorships work well. Vacuums are created when they're removed. Libya is a great example after Khaddafi was deposed. The attack on Benghazi was actually three separate attacks by three different organizations. When the first attack failed, two other followed.
If we didn't have troops in Iraq, it would fall apart as it did Afghanistan whether Russia or American's were there.
The Assad’s kept a lid on things a bit like Saddam. One day an ally the next tossed aside.
The Neoconservatives are a strange bunch and irrational.
I think DR knows his history on this more than most and can confirm it in more detail.
Good point. Terrible dictators are often replaced by even worse dictators. So the fall of a dictator is rarely an immediate cause for celebration.
Batista was replaced by Castro (as you noted).
Tsar Nicholas II was replaced by Lenin.
The Shah of Iran was replaced by Ayatollah Khomeini.
Etc.
Keep our State Department, Nuland, and Sullivan as far away as possible.
It started under Bush. The Wikileaks documents said the USAID (CIA) thought we could exploit sunni radicalism to bring down Assad. Obama inherited that program and in Syria we stitched sides in the War on Terror and started supporting Al Qeida with the Timber Sycamore program.
This effort to remove Assad is a 20 year CIA effort. It included sickening things like the fake gas attack, direct refusal of trump’s orders, destroying Europe with 2016 migrant wave, and creating ISIS.
A very shameful episode in our history.
In Benghazi, we were collecting and shipping weapons to Al Qeida in Syria, via Turkey, on the Saudi dime.
That was where we switched sides in the war in terror.
Obama’s foreign policy was a catalogue of errors. Libya and now Syria a total mess
That's what they wanted. Or at least 75% of them.
Realistically, there will be some fighting between rebel groups. Turkey is likely going to send some military units to battle the Kurds. Trump will pull out American troops. It's not our problem. They need to sort it out themselves.
Prediction: Jihadists of one flavor or another will come to dominate the new government. A new strongman will come to power and there will be no real elections. More people will be killed and repression will be worse than it was under Assad. And the Deep State will pat itself on the back and call it victory, while using the resulting instability to try to convince people the world is a dangerous place, so they need to be funded much more heavily.
I dont think that thats a real thing now. I see some pictures of women in hijabs trying not to drown interspersed amongst men with unusual fashion sense fishing.
Looks to me like a get together for the guys to signal who wants their bomb bay expanded.
I dont think there is much in the way of wine and dancing going on, at least not among the women.
I take no credit except reading! It’s all well documented, and out there. And Wikileaks was a trove. But Federal employees can’t read it or they get in trouble!
How long until they attack Israel?
"Democracy" is no longer working in Tunisia. They're reverting to their previous form of government, which is being ruled by an Arab Strongman.
