End of 54 years of Assad dynasty as rebels proclaim new chapter for Syria

The collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government marks the end of a nearly 54-year dynasty that began in 1971 under his father, Hafez al-Assad.

Assad’s ouster would end his 24-year iron rule and the 54-year Assad family dynasty, which began with his father, Hafez Assad, in 1971. Bashar Assad took power in 2000 following his father’s death and struggled for 13 years to maintain control during a brutal civil war that devastated the nation.

"After 50 years of oppression under Baath rule, and 13 years of crimes and tyranny and (forced) displacement... we announce today the end of this dark period and the start of a new era for Syria," the rebel factions said on Telegram.

Under Assad, Syria’s Alawite minority maintained dominance in a predominantly Sunni Muslim nation, while the country became a critical ally of Iran, remaining hostile toward Israel and the United States.

End of 54 years of Assad dynasty as rebels proclaim new chapter for Syria

The new chapter is Al Qaeda and ISIS. Syria has exchanged a brutal dictatorship for outright Islamic savagery.

“That’s what they wanted. Or at least 75% of them.
Realistically, there will be some fighting between rebel groups. Turkey is likely going to send some military units to battle the Kurds. Trump will pull out American troops. It’s not our problem. They need to sort it out themselves.”

Incorrect on all. Assad stood for elections and easily won. They were good elections and the opposition was never elected.
Turkey will go after the Kurds. And we will not pull out. We grabbed the oil rich NE corner for the Kurd separatists. There will be a lot of new fighting, massive Sunni Wahabbist repression, the eradication of the remaining Christians and Jews in Syria, and a whole new wave of Syrian refugees into the EU and America.

This is a very bad thing to any sane person. Only the CIA/Israelis and DC are happy.

Yeah, it was still a thing unless a fundamentalist family went to the beach.

Assad stood for elections and easily won.

That can't be a serious statement.

Turkey will go after the Kurds. And we will not pull out.

Trump wanted to pull out the last time.

There will be a lot of new fighting, massive Sunni Wahabbist repression, the eradication of the remaining Christians and Jews in Syria, and a whole new wave of Syrian refugees into the EU and America.

The Jews got out a long time ago. The Christians are not organizing themselves into militas so hopefully they'll find a way to get out soon.

And also includes what happened in Benghazi, and using it as a hub to divert weapons to Syrian rebels, who would then give them to ISIS.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving murderous tyrant. A year from now we’ll probably be able to say the same thing about his successor.

Too late for them to organize themselves like the Kurds. Now is the time to flee.

I am reminded of today’s Iranians whose parents and grand parents rioted against the Shah and for the very government they have now.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it, and they got it good and hard!

It remains to be seen whether or not the rebels institute another dark or even darker period.

I remember that Syria was loaded to the hilt with Russian anti-air weapons and that was about it.

The big question is Who gets the Oil? Because no one was fighting over a few desert oasis all these decades.

You can add China to the happy list. China owns most of the Syrian National oil company going back to 2003 when they first signed an oil deal. Starting around 2011 China had majority stake and that is a big problem for the EU as they get a lot of oil from Syria.

Syria was on the whole anti-American at the time. Hafez Assad played ball with the Soviets, thats when they got their Naval base (Tartus in 1971). He opposed pro-western groups in Lebanon. He hosted numerous Palestinian terrorist groups, some Islamic, others pro-Soviet communist. He hosted other Soviet-aligned terrorist assets (as did Gaddafi). It is rather hard to see this guy as “friendly”.

Syria was loaded with every sort of Soviet armament, tanks, aircraft, artillery, rockets and missiles. The army was numerous and trained in the Soviet manner. Syria under Hafez Assad was effectively a Soviet puppet state.
