Microsoft is preparing to kill off the old Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps by the end of this month and shift users to the Outlook for Windows app.
In November, Microsoft confirmed there would be no reprieve for the apps. It will be possible to export local emails, calendar events, and contacts that users have stored in Mail, Calendar, and People into the new Outlook up until December 31, 2024. After that, however, the ability to send or receive mail will be revoked.
"The new Outlook for Windows is for everyone. Now everyone with Windows gets the best of Outlook built into Windows for free," Microsoft said. AI is also on hand "to help you write impactful, clearer, mistake-free messages."
While it will continue to support "Classic" Outlook, Microsoft wants users to migrate to the new app. One user complained: "I don't need a bloated mail client. Mail and Calendar apps just work. If I need a more fully featured email client, I will just use the Office 365. [B]ut the 'new' Outlook is garbage."
Mail, or Windows Mail, was a follow-up to Outlook Express, so returning to the Outlook branding just might please some even if the implementation is not to everyone's taste. The People app arrived with Windows 8, and it has a confusing co-existence with Contacts, with both sharing some functionality.
The loss of People from Windows might trigger a few memories. Microsoft ditched the original Cardfile application, which was frequently used as a contact manager before the turn of the century. Schedule+ and Outlook Express eventually took over its contact management duties.
The new Outlook is web-based rather than a native Windows application. There is a marked difference in appearance and, according to some users, slower performance.
Still, switching between the old and new experiences had always been possible. Existing users of the three apps have mere weeks to go before either accepting the new Outlook or picking an alternative, such as Thunderbird or Vivaldi's email client. ®
So, "hateMS" may not meet their password standard. I probably would have tried something like "hateMSx1000".

Yes, including by organizations you may not want to see. People are seeing their online photos stolen and posted by someone else as their own. Or certain law enforcement agencies are using facial recognition software with online photos. Post online at your own risk.
I agree, although last time I checked Libre Calc isn’t as robust as Excel. What I mean is that, unless something has changed over the past year, Calc doesn’t have as many columns or rows as Excel has, which I think is almost unlimited. I’m going to check again to see if that’s still the case.

I’m going to do the same thing. I just reinstalled Linux on all of my PCs and laptop. I’ll have W7, W10 and Linux Mint as my disposal. After financial matters shake out over the next couple of months, I’ll be switching to Linux except in the case of programs on Windows I still need to use (Photoshop CS5 and Acrobat). I know there are Linux equivalents of both, but they aren’t as robust as the Windows products. But otherwise, Windows is going to be used less and less.
That's the reason why I hate modern MS operating systems. Everything up to Windows 7 let the user control and OWN their machine and experience. Everything since then does not. I got Windows 7 still installed, and yes I also have Windows 10, but I only use it when I have to. Otherwise, it's now Linux and W7. I'm tired of MicroThief knowing my business.

But even if one has a modern Windows O/S, and they have all the tweaks and addons progammed in, it's still Windows. MicroThief still owns your computer and can steal your info at any time. How does one counteract that? Genuinely curious.

Netscape Communicator. Wow, a blast from the past, and yes, I always loved using that as well. I can’t stand Firefox though I do use Thunderbird.

Yes, and my critical, personal data is on multiple drives disconnected from my PCs. I also have my own firewall and password protection that I control and trust far more than an online cloud service.
I should also add than Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are disabled on my PCs. Ethernet wake-up is also disable. Yes, I’m paranoid and trust little external to my PCs.
Outlook has always been kinda poor. :^) Check the data export options, and try them all to make sure you have your data in at least one format that your next program can import. That's all I've got, I'm out. :^)
They’ve informed me that my (admittedly old) HP PC cannot be upgraded to the latest permutation. Didn’t say why. But support will end next year. I’m not savvy enough to know what effects that will have.
I bought Carbonite in 2012 to protect my data. In 2013 I had a crash, losing everything and had to buy a new HP PC. When I asked Carbonite to load the saved data to my new PC they demanded a serial number and passcode which had been lost with everything else. Never got a thing from them.
