Earth’s magnetic field acts like a protective shield around the planet, repelling and trapping charged particles from the Sun. But over South America and the southern Atlantic Ocean, an unusually weak spot in the field – called the South Atlantic Anomaly, or SAA – allows these particles to dip closer to the surface than normal. Particle radiation in this region can knock out onboard computers and interfere with the data collection of satellites that pass through it – a key reason why NASA scientists want to track and study the anomaly.
The South Atlantic Anomaly is also of interest to NASA’s Earth scientists who monitor the changes in magnetic field strength there, both for how such changes affect Earth’s atmosphere and as an indicator of what’s happening to Earth’s magnetic fields, deep inside the globe.
Currently, the SAA creates no visible impacts on daily life on the surface. However, recent observations and forecasts show that the region is expanding westward and continuing to weaken in intensity. It is also splitting – recent data shows the anomaly’s valley, or region of minimum field strength, has split into two lobes, creating additional challenges for satellite missions."

When the discussion of education comes up the majority around here seem to take it as a request to humble brag until everyone gives up on the thread in irritation.
A few try to make comments on how they think college should be changed to create better graduates.
All that really does is change the sprayer on a hose drawing water from the same outhouse cesspit.
To a significant degree public grade schools are the problem and in a number of ways. (Remember during the cootie hoax there were those around here that demanded their daycares, uh, I mean public schools stay open instead of taking advantage of the chance?)
We can talk about those public shcool problems all day but that doesnt cover all the issues. Maybe even the most important issues. My youngest went to a charter school that was supposed to be for advanced kids. At first it was great, the kids did well and found ways to weave their interests to meet educational goals and wind up far ahead of their regular school counterparts.
The founder of that school left and some changes were made to staff over a summer break. The new teachers were too lazy to listen and work with students and attempted to trap them into the same regimented structure they left. The time in class that should have been spent on teaching and working with students was spent putting up with behaviors from students pretending they thought they were cats and horses and such. The children that were doing AP college credit work were dragged back into a remedial structure to accommodate the furry wannabes.
Its the structure that is the issue. The idea that because someone is 12 or 16 they are only allowed to do this or that level of work. That there is a such thing as a grade that is connected with age.
Do you remember SRAs (Science Research Associates Reading Laboratory)? I remember once in 7th grade standing at the teachers desk as he was correcting something. One of the others standing there pointed out that there werent any errors being found and wondered aloud which students work it could be. It seemed to me to not likely be a student and I suggested that MrTeacher had done some SRAs themselves to quality control the answer masks the teachers used.
Nope, thats when he showed me that I had gotten a 14.2. In 7th grade I had scored second month college sophomore on that test. My best friend at the time had a 5.something yet we were in the same “grade”. How could two people who were 9 levels of understanding apart be given the same material as the other in regular classes and still have it be effective?
Students need to have something like this in all subjects that encourages those with a gift in one area to get as far as they can in that subject. This also lets teachers see who needs help with what subjects and at what level the students understanding is at in that area.
A goal based curriculum and testing for subjects like that which would allow individual progress shouldnt be too hard to create and administer online. It should be “Here is the starting line, see how far you can go” not a concept like math equations are gated by stope signs that can not be passed without an age necessary to understand them.
If younger children in the past could achieve college level work in the and some children today can achieve similar college level education and display college level ability and understanding then of what value is a university? If university graduates regularly are not able to read or do basic math as we find is true today then of what value was the university experience?
Brilliant young people are regularly held back from their achievements and morons are given diplomas for taking out loans they would have known they couldnt pay back if they had basic math skills.
There does have to be major changes, the entire structure needs to be destroyed and re-envisioned with classes taught using methods with results.
Maybe the source and the quality of the water should be considered before we get into nonsense like the which spray setting is “best”. The biggest obstacle would be explaining to the low imagination parents that will get hysterical over their daycare how the new system could work. There is an element of Thurston Howells out there on our side that think college is for purchasing a “roundness” that achieves and confers a degree of nobility. They are small enough in number that they just need to be flat out told their idea of education is an antique for history books and no longer of any relevance.
There has been a growing number of micro-schools out there for a while now that could show the way if we could present these ideas to the population.

My lazy half says “let’s go back to the 50s because it worked then”. And to some extent, it did. But I imagine that not all kids did really well in school even back then. Still, a high school diploma was worth something, whereas now, its value varies from “good student” to “showed up enough times for 12 years”. That’s one thing I’d like to change - I realize we aren’t all the same, and some excel at different things compared to others, but I don’t think a certificate of achievement (diploma) should be given to someone that hasn’t achieved anything close to what that diploma is supposed to represent.
Schools are a huge, impersonal institution. I was a horrible student in most of my high school classes, doing only what I needed to get by (barely in some classes). There were underlying issues that I won’t get into, but suffice to say that problems outside of the school itself caused me to really feel like it wasn’t worth the effort. I think that kind of thing happens a lot in the younger years. (NO, it was NOT gender confusion, LOL).
When I finally buckled down and started taking college classes a few years later, I actually applied myself and to my surprise, did well. I also found that on-the-job training had a huge amount of value through the years. There is a lot to be said for hands-on training where you can see the result of your activity and your applied learning and skill immediately.
