Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I think the image is actually from one of the “Lake Placid” movies but I think the caption is hysterical.

If that were animated it would be the communication from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

It was a nice walk. Got kind of cloudy and windy, but the trail is down in a gully and mostly out of the wind.

I’m glad you had a nice time.

The wind picked up here, and that brought the temperature down, so what with the overcast, it wasn’t a very nice day to be outside.

So now, it’s time to call it a day. Have a good night!

That’s cute!

Good morning.

I hope you slept well, after your hike yesterday. I slept fairly well, after the last two restless nights, so I don’t feel too tired today.

The doc wants me to drink at least one bottle of water with electrolytes in it and increase my protein intake so that means that once again, I’ll have to change up my diet. He stressed the electrolytes, but a box of those is so darn expensive. And they taste nasty.

I can’t do Gatorade, as it makes my hands swell, so I have to buy stuff called “Liquid IV.”

Nothing is planned for today, except to sort the laundry for Monday so I don’t have to do it tomorrow. (At least I don’t have to get up at 0500 to get ready for church for the next 52 weeks!)

Do you get to see the baby every day? Or just get photos of her?

We get a picture most days. The last time we saw her was last Friday. Sally says they may come to church tomorrow, so the Spanish choir and volunteers can fawn and coo, unless Georgia is still feeling cranky from her shots yesterday.

If not, there’s next week, weather permitting.

FS used to always get sick when he had the shots. I don’t even know how many they’re supposed to have, now, but when he was little, it was three.

That would be nice to have the baby at church! I hope things work out, including the weather, so that folks will have a chance to coo and be grandmotherly! New babies are so precious!

We have a new one to be “given a name and a blessing” about every three months. When we first moved to this chapel, we had room to grow, but not any more. Even the overflow area is full these days.

Another cute one!

Good morning. Did you have a good day yesterday? And sleep well last night? And did Tom show up with his dirty clothes?

At bedtime last night, I finally remembered to sort the clothes for tomorrow. *face palm*

Another morning I didn’t want to get up, but the alternative was hearing the alarm ring, and that jars me awake. So when I set it at night, I try to wake up before it rings.

It will be colder at 0900 than it is right now — 33°. And I’ll be leaving for church about an hour after that, so it won’t be much warmer.

Good afternoon. Yesterday we did music for a Quinceanera and then went to the party, got home and found Tom here, played Wingspan (I won), and then I went to bed. Today we had more music.

It’s cold here, too.

(I’m glad you won at Wingspan!)

This late start to church threw me for a loop. It was after 1230 when I got home, and I realized I was 1. cranky, 2. hungry, 3. in pain, and 4. irritated at myself that I had sat for so long without moving.

The good thing is that Annette was there and we have a tentative date for lunch on Tuesday, now that she’s not going out of town again for a while. She said 2024 had been a bad year and was glad it was over with. Her brother died followed about a month later by her sister and earlier, both of her dogs died.

Yeah, I’d be glad to have the year over with as well.

I forgot to take my makeup off as soon as I got home and only remembered when my face began to itch. That didn’t help my mood!

So I’m glad to put the day behind me, but I’m wondering if I might be better off going back to 0900, rather than staying with 1030. I noticed at least four people from our ward were at the 0900, so I wouldn’t be alone, for sure.

Now I’m going to fix Chip’s food, then my own and head down the hall. (My stealthy guy makes the cutest little snore sounds!)

I’m up and at ‘em, though I’d rather still be asleep. If I can get breakfast down me fast enough I can get it done and get another four hours of sleep.

It’s 32° so I’m not looking forward to the jog to the laundry room, even though it’s very short! However, tomorrow it’s going to be 28 in the morning and only reach a high of 46°, with lots of wind.

I’m going to resist saying I wish it were summer. It’s far too soon for that. And besides, it would sound like complaining!
