Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Slow cook up to a good internal temp, then hot sear in either cast iron or on a grill.

I agree. There’s a cat trying to move in with us. She has a home up the street, though. The other day, she caught a giant cicada out back on the cement patch and played with it for half an hour before she went home.

Last year after some tornado activity, I looked at my vet's page on Facebook to see if they sustained any damage. There was an urgent message from one of the vet techs that a client's health had deteriorated to such an extent that he needed to rehome his dozen kittehs. (He lives in the boondocks and they abandon animals there so he takes them in.) I arranged to adopt one. The poor little guy was so scared that he hid behind the HVAC unit (the cat, not the gentleman). The gentleman brought the first cat's buddy over to coax first cat out, and second cat ran behind the HVAC unit with kitteh #1. It took them two months to figure out that I don't eat cats. We're all OK now, though.

They are absolutely delightful kittehs! Real blessings. You never know....

Good morning. Happy Monday!

That kitteh makes me want to sing:
Come lets mix where Rockerfellers
Walk with sticks or umbrellas in their midst.
Puttin’ on the ritz!

Anyway, I’ll spare you my singing.

My watch says I got a good sleep score last night. But I still feel tired. Maybe it’s just a knee-jerk reaction to Monday. I will shortly meet my 66th birthday. Semi-retirement is calling.

It’s a warm-ish Monday. There was rain last night. The official site says about .1”. Mrs. ArGee is tired of going out to feed the mosquitos - er - water the newly-planted shrubs.

Not a bad start to the Wordle week.

They are guessing that we may get some rain on Wed-Thurs... hoping that their guess is a good one! 🤞🏻

How would that “semi retirement” work? Reduced hours/days at your current place, or leave there and pick up some part-time side gigs?

Happy Monday.

Was supposed to go fishing with Dad over the weekend, but he’s not feeling good again. Mom took him to the ER. Infection of some kind.

Since Dad down... gotta take Mom to her pre-op physical today for her hip surgery.... In the middle of a work day.

To top that off... this doesn’t happen very often...

I’m thinking not being required to work 40 hours/week. Taking jobs I want to take. Maybe even getting involved in non-profits rather than working for money.

I was fortunate enough to get the starting letter with my starter word or I would likely have faced the same fate.

Ouch!

Sometimes when it rains, it pours... hopefully things turn back around to the positive soon!
