No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
Pretty kitties!
Good morning. I’m glad you had a good Christmas Day.
I was very happy to be home. I came into the living room this morning and saw something on the floor close to Chip’s tent bed and couldn’t figure out what it was. I walked over and picked it up and it was an 8” long piece of felt, about 4” wide, that he had made from his fur coming out and being laid on. Silly boy. Took all the insulation out of his little bed! What a thing to wake up to. I guess I could have fashioned it into a toy of some kind, but he doesn’t know what toys are, so...
I slept so well last night, and I’ve got jobs to do today — sorting pills and washing the dishes that sat here while I was gone. Sad to say, I’ve never been able to cook a meal or bake and item and still be able to stand up long enough to do the dishes the same day. The pain level is just too high. So I’ll get those done first thing.
FS will be over today to spend some time with me before they fly home tomorrow. I’ll check and see if there are any good movies in town as I have two free passes to get in. Lucky me!
Chuck sent me a text wishing me a Merry Christmas, yesterday, among all the other wishers. I was too distracted by events at the Bloomington Flop House to concentrate on who needed messages and who didn’t. Mostly family. So I should be flogged with a wet noodle.
FS was more stuffed up in St George than he ever was here, with the cat he said he was allergic to! I felt bad for him!
The last I heard from him, the brownies were almost gone. I managed to get one square, and the rest went to the other folks, which was the intention in the first place. They liked them, though I thought they were a little dry. A tad too much flour.
The first year after a loved one has passed is always the hardest to get through. Mrs ArGee will have the same reactions, in varying degrees of grief for every milestone during the coming year. I wish her well.
I’ve thought about getting a Menorah but was delayed each time by the cost.
I hate returning things the day after Christmas. I always tried to wait the longest possible time because I hate standing in line.
Missed it...

I feel bad for all the people who claim to be allergic to cats, too.
Good morning. All fine here. Anoreth and Dion are driving back to Philadelphia today. They planned to leave by 6:00 a.m. to avoid awful traffic in the DC area. Bill is flying home to New York. He left his present from Anoreth; I will text him a picture of it and ask if he wants me to mail it. He’s such a flake.
I cleaned the stove this morning before I told the youth to get up. Of course, Kathleen is making a cooked breakfast this morning, sigh.
Not sure what all we’ll do today other than cleaning and working on music for Sunday. We have practice tomorrow evening.
‘Morning all, warmer outside than inside the refrigerator...
I’m glad you had most of your children at home for Christmas. I always loved that as a kid. And even a young adult, though visits “home” were mostly to the husband’s family home.
Still, it’s all good.
I’m going to sort pills in a few, but I need to have Second Breakfast, first. Then I’ll sit for a while and rest my back while waiting for FS to make his appearance. Then I’ll get after the dishes and he can sit in this chair and talk to me!
Oh dear on Kathleen’s cooked breakfast. Any other day would have been fine....
The week has been so interrupted that the two errands I had planned for this week will have to wait for next week. Life is good!
Somehow, all conversations at the BFH (Bloomington Flop House) ended or began with discussions about age and age-related problems. I really didn’t need to be reminded that I’m getting older than I want to be! Still, aside from that peculiarity, the visiting was good.
That must be a nice feeling. I’m not sure we’re quite there yet.
It’s warmer than inside the freezer, though.
Good Morning!
Hoping that everyone enjoyed their Christmas/Hanukkah celebrations...
Mrs. zz and I realized that setting the dinner for 2PM was much too ambitious and we had to push it back an hour... since the dinner that we host every 4th Sunday is always at 7PM, we developed a routine that gets everything done in time... shaving 5 hours off of that left us in a tizzy...
We got in all done for 3PM and it went well...
Awful Wordle outing today... I need to stop ASSUMING that certain words are not considered ‘words’ for Wordle and having them burn a row... did that twice in today’s... just made it in under the wire....

I haven’t played Wordle for a week, so I should probably do that before things get out of hand here, and I end up not doing it again!
I’m glad your Christmas went well! Mine was much better than expected, but I was super tired when all was said and done. I don’t see how FS’s F-i-L does the things he does at the age of 91, but I’ll try to give him a run for his money!! LOL!
One grandson was invited, complete with plane ticket from FL, but he declined. The other was ill with kidney problems so he didn’t participate much. I slept on the floor again which I haven’t done in a few years, so my sleep was restless. Last night, in my own bed, I slept very well!
Just sorted my pills so one job is done, with two to go!
...but I was super tired when all was said and done.
That was definitely the story here!!
Well, FS was here for about 30 minutes and then had to go as Those In Charge had plans that he didn’t know about until the last minute, which is par for the course.
They’ll be leaving tomorrow and he is stressed about flying, as he always is. He said he won’t be coming next year, and in fact, doesn’t want to come again unless there is a funeral. Or something else, just as major. Still, no pics of us together this time. That’s pretty sad.
I did the dishes while he sat here and kept me company, which was good and patient of him! He’s a good son. A little confused at times, but a good son!
So I’m going to eat and then watch some more of DIP!
It sounds like “never flying again” is something your son says, and then he does it again.
Bill made it home to his cat. He forgot his present, so I’ll have to mail it to him. Attention to detail is not his strong point. Looking pretty is his strong point.
Patrick said the mechanic told him there’s nothing wrong with his car that they can figure out, which is nice in that he doesn’t have to pay for a repair, but bad in that the next time it doesn’t start for “no reason,” he’ll have to go through this again.
DP and I went to Lowe’s and got a new floor mat for in front of the kitchen sink. It wasn’t marked down. The old one had worn out.
I cleaned the stove this morning. We’ll eat leftovers for dinner.
It’s still weird not having a cat, but I like being able to leave the bedroom door open at night. It keeps the room warmer.
I don’t like flying, either, but I will because I love him and I love my daughter, so if the only way I can see them is to fly, then I’ll bypass that dislike and let the love be the motivating factor in the flying.
He hasn’t put that together, yet, but maybe he will. And yes, he will probably fly again, especially if he thinks my health is in any way compromised.
I’m glad Bill made it home to his cat but sorry about the temporary case of being scatter-brained. Poor Pretty Guy.
Sorry about Patrick’s car having “nothing wrong with it.” I hate when that happens.
Yeah, there are always mixed emotions about cats. When you have them you have compromises to make and when they’re gone, you really miss them. I love cats, and I really love the Chipster that runs in Stealth Mode 95% of the time. He snored very loudly today, and I muted the TV just so I could hear it! Silly me. I don’t know how long he has, but I need to get him to the vet soon. In two months and two weeks, I’ll have had him a year, and he really needs to be seen. Maybe he’ll even be tranquil long enough for me to hold him for a minute!
Back in the days of 12-month warrantees we had a car that had the ignition system die 3 times within the 12 months, but always with a different reason. So when it failed the 3rd time I told the dealership that there's some underlying root cause they need to find that's causing all these other parts to fail. Until you find that, you're not done and I'll demand the warrantee be extended until you do.
They found a place where the wiring had been routed outside the wiring harness instead of inside, and it rubbed against the harness creating a short. Each time there was a short, a different component blew.
The lesson here is they're not all of them that bright. If their initial diagnostics don't show them the problem, they don't all know how to look deeper. Someone they respect might chat with them about that.
Oh, and our car started fine for years after that.
Once upon a time I was going to fly for a living. I had 40 hours in the cockpit, including 2 hours in a T-37 trainer. (Although, to be fair, I liked the propeller planes better than the jets. But maybe I just needed more time in the Tweet.)
Then migraines. But I still love flying.
It might be that a trip to the vet and a shot or two would make him feel so much better that he would be a lot friendlier.
He was at work on ... Monday? Tuesday? and it wouldn’t start when he got ready to go home. But nothing is wrong. The next time it breaks, maybe he’ll ask Sally where to take it. She knows something about repair shops from working in the parts department.
Thanks Face. Nativity is beautiful !!!
