Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

True... but it seems selfish. Just the odd circumstances of my life right now that allowed me to experience this.

I would guess the situation with the kids is temporary... until the “issues” get sorted out...

It could be years... We’re stubborn folk. It is what it is.

My wife has occasionally gotten similar proof but historically it hasnt been a vicious chihuahua so much as geese, turkeys, or a stray detachment of the flock of goats/sheep.

There was a bantam black silkie rooster that someone dumped here that used to get the drivers from the city all worked up. He was the meanest little black furry softball alive or so he thought.

We have put out a window high delivery drop box now so that if the drivers are organized they can deliver and be relatively safe from chickens then scoot right on out the U shaped driveway before the rest of the animals can mount an effective anti-delivery man assault.

Irony... I’m actually waiting on some Amazon stuff to come in. No dog though... not yet.

Oy, two darn things!

I need to turn in the old license plate from the van I sold before I can cancel the insurance on it. Maybe tomorrow ...

That’s the way it works up here, too. When F-I-L gave a care to B-I-L, the latter mailed the plate directly to the DMV and we got a receipt in the mail. We had to have that to cancel the insurance on the car.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

I think kitteh needs a new stool. Although it sometimes amazes me the positions The Princess thinks are comfortable.

We’re kind of in a holding pattern waiting for a closing date. I don’t know why that takes so long since the buyer’s mortgage is approved. But there are lots of mysteries around closing on a house, from my perspective.

I’m still stuck in 5s-ville on Wordle.

Good Midweek Morning!

I am noticing that it seems to be getting darker earlier in the evening of late, but don’t notice the change as much in the mornings... 🤷🏽‍♂️

It's evident here. I get up at 0530 to walk The Princess. I noticed when I started having to carry the flashlight to pick up after her. She's white so I can still see her in the apartment with the lights out, but it's getting harder.

Began wiring up my Monster in a box controls last night. Edited together a 23.7 second sound loop for the “monster” with a 3 minutes ambient loop that plays constantly independent of the monster sequence trigger.

Next... set up the cabling for the PIR and the strobe light. After that... it’s just the pneumatics.

Fun stuff... Already planning my next project. :-)

I’m not into Halloween, but I have wondered if some of the hepatic feedback stuff could make it feel like someone who just stepped into your lobby had ridden a very fast “down” elevator. Then the next door opens into a fiery realm. Same feedback makes them feel like they’re riding up when they leave.

Curtain walls that roll “up”, giving you the sensation of moving “down”... especially if you combine it with a couple of fans to move the air that way... Add in a “dropping note” sfx and viola... You could even have a hotair blast that triggers on door open...

Neat.

I saw an idea where a guy was making tube frame “skeletons” to hang cheap halloween costumes from. Then he’d use various bits of tech to make them move, react, etc... Of course, he’d add bits to the costumes to make ‘em look a bit better too...
