Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

There’s a PIR sensor that triggers a pre-programmed loop. I have a micro PC I can use if necessary.

We had one day that was cooler. That’s something.

Good morning. Happy Friday!

I iz ready. Why u late?

It’s raining. It’s a good soaking rain, which we haven’t had enough of this summer. And it was considerably warmer this morning than yesterday morning. Maybe the end of summer won’t be so strange.

I’m getting quotes to put a trailer hitch on one of the cars. The transmission shop I called about a cooler said he wouldn’t tow anything with a Ford Escape. He said their transmissions are weak. Unless I hear or read otherwise that means we’ll probably be putting the hitch on the Pilot. It can tow more anyway. But that’s Mrs. ArGee’s car and she doesn’t really like to pull trailers.

Too many good options for Wordle today. “Phew” is right.

Hoping that everyone has something nice, at least relaxing, lined up for the weekend... It looks like we will get some rain, we sure could use some about now...

A so-so Wordle that could have been a bit better...

Safe travels for your trip to the Wildlands... is it a solo journey or are you both heading there?

This trip is solo. It’s a major effort to take The Princess since there’s the risk of seizure and we have to take the portable freezer for her food.

To be fair, Mrs. ArGee is a little difficult to travel with because she gets so tense, so it’s easier for me when it’s solo.

Looks like you got stuck in a doom loop. Too many viable options...

Towing... Yeah... An Escape probably isn’t the best for towing... a Pilot not much better. Then again, even my boat has a v6 in it and everything else is a v8... so I’m biased. :-)

I had a factory towing kit on my 03 Escape, but that was the boxy version. I drove that for 265K miles, pulling a small U-Haul occasionally. Being that I’m not Ahnold, I can’t just load up several thousand pounds in a trailer.

But first, the quote.

Perhaps you could rent a towing vehicle in order to avoid wear and tear? We bought a “fun mover” for our cross-country move and did it over six or seven years.

Good thought.

This is our first move without a trailer. We may just make do with putting everything on the truck that doesn’t fit in the car.

But if we “run” something out to our daughter in the midwest we won’t want to rent a truck because it’s so expensive to rent one round-trip. That’s why we’re thinking of a trailer.

Very understandable... we make a lot more “solo” trips since we got our little house dog... the Papillon... it is like traveling with a small child...
