No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
I’m sorry for your and your family’s loss. Hopefully the next steps will go smoothly and that you family gets along better than Mrs. ArGee’s does.
As you’ve seen from my experience, M-I-L might become a little difficult as she processes her grief. Hopefully you are all stocked up on grace and empathy. You may need it.
I think you can be excused for a little Wordle distraction.
I’m sorry about your family’s loss.
Condolences to the Family on the passing of the FiL...
Had Ana and Pete for the weekend... They went over to a friends place for some games Saturday night... When they came back, Pete started throwing up... Food poisoning. 6’2” 300lbs... With food poisoning...
My Daughter and I took turns keeping an eye on him all night Saturday and most of Sunday. Cleaning up was not fun...
He was feeling much better when their Mother came to pick them up last night.

I guess you, Z, and I had the same 2nd-to-last guess.
Limited options in the English language... :-)
I slept until 0730, but the first hour wasn’t very restful. When I got up I had Second Breakfast and then hung up the dainties, and came out here to check emails.
I had a whole fistful to answer that couldn’t be delayed, so I’m very late in getting here, and for that, I apologize.
The wind picked up to 29 mph out of the north, so my new storm door is keeping the kitchen at a cozy level, thankfully! Although its 47°, the wind chill puts it at 39 Fs. A good day to stay in. The wind wasn’t blowing at 0230 and 0400, so it’s a good time to wash clothes!
Yes, especially in light of the fact that there were over 50 women and girls in that one room! The girls came in for the lesson from the Young Women's group, and that's a big deal for them.
Did you get all the wreaths delivered?
Sorry to hear you M-i-L is still having trouble adjusting, but change is difficult for people with disabilities.
Glad to see your Wordle scores have done anything radical!
Thanks. Yes, it will be a process for all of us, especially M-I-L... the biggest challenge now is trying to get agreement on WHEN the memorial service should be held... 🙏🏼
Thanks, it was due and thankfully he didn’t have to suffer any longer...
I’m sorry about your F-i-L, but just remember that there are no rules for grief, and that everyone does it differently.
When my dad passed, we were at home, as no one realized he was so close to leaving us. Still, when we got to the hospital, he was already gone, and my mother spent about 10 minutes alone with him. When she came out, she was crying. He, too, had suffered enough.
My condolences and prayers for comfort for all of you. This is a very tender time for all your hearts.
Thanks. It was a blessing to him to not have to suffer any longer...
Food poisoning can be awful, glad that he recovered relatively quickly... Looks like you ran into similar trickery on the Wordle front...
Ya, there’s been a few lately where I think that I have it, only to be one letter off...
there are no rules for grief, and that everyone does it differently.
Yes, very true... it is certainly a process, not an event...
Hospice had told her earlier in the day that it was likely within 24 hours...
I always keep charcoal capsules on hand for just such incidences. I’m really prone to food poisoning, even the milder forms, so I’ve always got charcoal handy.
My goodness! How old is Pete?? I still picture him as 10, but I know he’s way past that!
Sorry for your Parental Vigil. Good thing Ana was there to help, and no, cleaning up spew is never fun. Or easy.
17... Ana was mostly there just in case he asperated some effluvia or some other such emergency. I’d already cleaned up most of the prior eruptions by that time.
Once he was down to chucking up mostly bile, it was mostly as you said, a vigil...
So Ana must be in her early 20s, yes? My goodness.
The only time I feel old is when I see my siblings’ offspring. Then I realize my own used to play with some of them and that really makes me feel my age!
So how is Pete feeling today? I hope he’s doing much better!
Ana is 21...
I haven’t heard any new word on Pete. Hopefully, since he slept most of yesterday, he got enough sleep to actually make it to school.
Stomach flu and/or minor food poisoning is no match for a Slavic digestive tract...
Yeah, I get it. If I hadn’t had bleeding ulcers, I would have been able to withstand a lot of stuff that gave me food poisoning, but my stomach walls are far too thin for that, now. Transfusions are not fun!
We’re still working on delivering wreaths. I’m calling and emailing people now!
