Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Nice job on a hole that seriously frustrated the Z-man and me.

We used to try to make ice cream when I was a little younger. I could never figure out why it came out so mushy. Only later did my STEM mind kick in enough to tell me that I needed the ice to be melting faster to pull the heat out of the freezing chamber.

One of these days I’ll try again.

For me... It’s using enough salt and smaller chunks of ice. A large ba of ice from the gas station and a big rubber mallet work ok... There is probably an easier way to break down the ice a bit, but it is cathartic...

I'm still using READY as my starter word. Everything else is elimination and “best guess”.

Although, I have missed completely on a few words... What do we do in that instance in regards to Par? Just consider that we'd tossed out putter in the water hazard and are snorkeling to retrieve it?

Sounds like the Saturday party should be fun!

My wife used to make ice cream at home, my memory of it is that it was pretty good... I don’t know why she hasn’t made any in a while.... 🤷🏽‍♂️

On this course we could consider that we’d hit the ball down one of those chasms and actually attempted to repel down to get it.

Well, yes. The good thing about memories is that they don’t take up space or have to be insured.

Repelled down to get it... Fought some guy in a cave and ended up on Barsoom.

Good Friday Morning!

I believe that he is a famous explorer...

Well we finally had the long promised thunderstorms... thankfully there was nothing severe in our area, but we did lose power around 4:00pm... the sole feeder line for our area got taken out about 20 miles to the south... repair estimate came in for 10:30pm... cut over to generator around 4:30 and power was restored by 7:00pm... nice and quiet since...

On the 8th hole I had a decent tee shot and played a fairway wood to get on in two... however, I was on the back portion of the green on the wrong side of the dividing ridge... I lined up a long putt that I thought would roll down to the pin but it broke off far to the right... I was fortunate to get it in the cup with a long putt for the par four...

Good morning. Happy Friday!

It’s a little cooler today, but still a decent temp for spring.

We may have a burial date for M-I-L. I might not be attending, though. The cemetary where F-I-L is buried is 1.5 hours away and someone needs to stay with The Princess. So that will probably be me. Young ArGee did that duty through F-I-L’s funeral and burial.

I must get overconfident when I see a low par. On today’s hole I hit a nice drive off the tee to put me squarely in the first cutout. My second shot put me on the green near the hole. It was a fairly easy putt for the birdie.

Raining again this AM... but festivities planned for this weekend and merriment to be had.

Tipped the ball off the tee for abouta 20 yrd initial drive. Tried getting under it with a #1 wood and toss more turf than I did the ball itself. Able to make up some distance by switching to the #1 iron. Ended near the rough, but had the green in sight. #5 iron dropped me on the green and a long putt sank it for me. On to the next hole...

It’s snowing right now.

In the 70s a couple days ago.

You don’t like the weather? Stick around for a few minutes...
