Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

And the smell of frying bacon didn’t wake you?

Amazing isn't it?

We're turning a turkey carcass into soup. In my befogged state I thought it had boiled dry and was on fire.

Yikes.

I was so disoriented I nearly wobbled into the closet trying to get out of my room to the kitchen.

I guess that counts as a rude awakening!

16°, starting to get light, so I guess that's today's low.

Next step, isn’t there a state agency/regulatory commission in place that handles things like caregivers that you could go to for advice on which local/nearby caregivers are accredited and capable of handling “difficult” patients?

You won’t know if it’s the wisest choice or not unless you tried an agency and found them lacking. If Mrs. ArGee is handling all that, then I say, more power to her. So far it seems she’s doing quite well, under the circumstances.

Your M-i-L, no matter her state of mind, deserves the best care that can be provided.

Things have come a long way since my brother was ill, even though it hasn’t been that long ago that he passed away. His dear wife took care of him and it wore her out to the point that within six weeks of my brother’s passing, she followed him. She had her mentally disabled son to help her with the heavy lifting, but she wasn’t about to give my brother up to anyone else to care for.

I’ve used the microwave for bacon since my first microwave, and that was in the 80s. I put one paper towel sheet down for each slice of bacon and just one or two over the top to catch the splatters. Then give it one minute for each slice and you can remove the top sheet, take off the bacon, then dump the rest in the trash.

Unless you give Tyson the bacon grease. It’s good for dogs and cats, and makes their coats all shiny and sleek-looking! My son saves his for pancakes. Which I used to do, before I got the microwave.

Mom is in home hospice care, she lives with us, and has three CNA visits a week for showers and eyeballs on for any issues. One RN visit a week for vitals and a chat. Occasional chaplain visits and doctor virtual visits. Medicare funds it.

We have a small local hospice provider, they are wonderful. Wonderful.

There probably is a state agency here in NY for that, but I’m not sure I want the gub-mint driving. Next thing you know we’d have to completely remodel the interior of her home to allow her to stay there. So we’re using referrals to find the good ones. It takes some trial and error.

Mrs. ArGee and I have had discussions about how sustainable this model is. Mrs. ArGee is handling things but it stresses her greatly. So I think at some point we’re either going to have to move into M-I-L’s home, which has one set of issues, or move her in with us back in the Wildlands. That second might kill her early as she doesn’t handle change well.

We have a private hospice care provider, we had no government agency inspecting our home.

We’ll apply for Hospice when she’s declared to be within 6 months of death. She is on “Palliative Care” which means she does get home visits from her PCP. And he’s trying to help us come up with drugs to help her sleep. She seems to be shrugging most everything off. We haven’t tried a tranq that will stop a rhino, yet.

I asked and was told that the typical patient in home hospice care lasts 6 months.

Mom will be at 2 years next month!

But I’ve never been faced with something like this.

The hardest decision I ever had to make was whether to pull the plug on my mother or not. I had two older siblings by my side then, and yet, it was my husband who finally voiced what everyone was thinking. “She doesn’t need to suffer any more.” After we left, the medicos unhooked her but it took her three days to pass.

People with disabilities never handle changes very well, but they can be eased into the change. It just depends on the balance of options. If it’s too radical, then no. But you and Mrs ArGee are doing the best you can with what you have and I admire you for that. Not many people would have the intestinal fortitude to even attempt something like it, so good on ya!

This is probably all TMI, but sometimes, I do that.

“That harness is too big for me!”

Good morning. I hope you had a good night.

I had nightmares again. I’ll be glad when my appointment is over with! Maybe I’ll be able to relax and sleep well tonight.

We’ll have a 36° for a low this morning and 63 for a high this afternoon, and it will be sunny.

Now I need to go take a shower!

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

We had 15 fs this morning when I went to walk the Princess. The guess for the high is 35.

M-I-L fell last night and the caregiver couldn’t get her up so I had to go over. I’m not sure why it was hard for the caregiver. She wasn’t in an awkward position. But M-I-L gets very stiff when she falls which does make it harder. And I had help so I cant judge by that. Oddly, otherwise it was a good night of sleep for M-I-L.

Today’s Wordle was tricksy. Not wicked or false, just tricksy.

Good Midweek Morn!

15° F sounds downright chilly to me! But, very seasonal... We are heading down to see another TSO Christmas show this evening, this year it is The Lost Christmas Eve tour which we have not yet seen...

And yes, that Wordle was very tricksy today...

Good morning. Not bad, all things considered. It’s cold here. I’m getting my hair cut this afternoon. Vlad will take Kathleen to her riding lesson.
