Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

-00!

Good reminder.

Good morning. I made the mistake of drinking two cups of coffee after 6:00 p.m., having pushed the wrong button on the coffee maker and ended up with a pot of coffee. It was not a good night.

Good morning. It’s Friday Eve!

I’ll start wishing everyone a happy day next week, I think. It was interesting reading ‘Face’s obit and trying to put names to FS and RD and so forth. Thanks for sharing it, T-C.

Yesterday we got up to 72 fs. We’re back to normal highs in the upper 40s for a while now, based on the best guesses at weather.com.

Mrs. ArGee donated to the American Cancer Society for a cousin’s death. She got on so many mailing lists after that she decided she would give the money to a family member to donate after that.

No lucky breaks on the links today. After a nice initial drive I went from the trap before the green to the trap after the green, then blew what should have been an easy putt. So, 1 under and 1 over puts me at par after 2.

Sorry about your night. I used to be able to drink regular coffee after 10pm with no trouble. No more.

Now I just have to deal with why I put my keys in the refrigerator before I went to bed, or other strange late-evening mishaps.

I don’t usually have coffee or tea at night. I’ll be more careful in the future.

Good Morning!

A chilly overnight here, down into the upper 30s...

After the first couple of holes in this new round, I see that my short game is extremely rusty... today I was on in 3 but lost it...

Came up light off the tee... Didn’t quite have the distance I was looking for. 3 iron got me close to the green though. Quick chip shot put me just a couple feet off the pin and a light tap with the putter sank it in 4.

I took down my St Paddy’s decorations and worked on breaking down some old pallets I picked up for a couple of projects.

Making a “rough wood” stand for the indoor herb garden I’m growing. Cilantro, basil, oregano, and chives at this point.

The rest of the wood is going in to a Halloween decoration I’m making.

There’s an Instructable for it. Still not sure if I’m going to go with magnetic “poppers” or pnuematic.

I also dug out a 3-tier rack for raised planter treys. I might plant some beans, peppers, and peas. Haven’t decided yet.

Thanks zzeeman... Haven’t used the lingo in a couple of decades... so please forgive any inaccuracies.

Interesting activities. Living in the south, we can grow our herbs outside. It’s almost time for Epic Fail Lawn Service to mow the random native greenstuff already.
