No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
We will probably plug in our outside lights (which stay up all year) sometime this weekend to get the Christmas season underway... maybe decorate the gate sometime this week if I can find the time...
We’ve used paper plates some years. I usually pick some up at the clearance sale and save them. This year, I just got napkins!
She went to the Dollar Store and got all of the plastic plates and flatware, table cloths, and table decorations for a ridiculously cheap price... she figured economizing on that stuff left more $$$ for food and drink!
And it looked just fine....
Good plan.

I’ve Gotten a late start today, but that’s OK because nothing is pressing. I need to go through my doilies and see who gets what for Christmas.
And I’ve used disposable dishes since I got back from Texas, and that was in 2004. I’m back to where I was as a child bride, in that I don’t cook much because I don’t like to stand and do dishes.
Maybe I’m just lazy! Or maybe it just hurts too much to stand for any length of time.
I finished watching the final three seasons of “Foyle’s War,” and they were quite a bit more intense than the first five. Surprise ending in the final episode, for sure.
Anyway, I’m suddenly faced with re-watching the series’ I’ve already watched and gotten bored with or find something new, which is harder than it sounds because of the profanity of the script writers. That don’t seem to realize that most civilized people have enough of a vocabulary that they never resort to the F-Bomb.
So, as a result, I’m back to watching Curiosity Stream and Get Factual. I want to subscribe to NFL but I can’t justify $7 a month. Another year when I’ll miss the Super Bowl Commercials!
My Turkey Day was “quiet.” (That’s a euphemism for “I spent it alone.”)
My Christmas decorations are easy, though this year, I won’t put up my little tree. Himself might find it intriguing enough to pull down, so I’ll just settle for ice skates on the door and Nativities everywhere else!
I want to post a pic of the skates on the door, but there is no image code to copy. Is there a way to assign one?
You could try “Remington Steele” if it’s on your streaming service.
I’ve heard of it, but never watched it, so I’ll look for it tomorrow.
It suddenly clouded over, and without that sun coming in the window, even with the blinds closed, the living room really cooled off. Normally, it really warms up this time of day. It was too uncomfortable for me, so I’m getting some heat on my legs.
No wonder Chip likes to sleep in my chair!
It’s not deep or, like, accurate, but it’s clever and stylish and relaxing.
Cute!!
Good morning. FS sent me a photo to wake me up this morning. The one day I turn off the alarm and one of the kids plays alarm clock. *sigh* But it was cute. It was him in his new VW Christmas tree shirt, with the caption, “I’ve been waiting all year to wear this shirt!
I had nightmares last night, so I was awake for over an hour. I’ve finally gotten to where, if I wake up in the middle of the night, I try to limit myself to 30 minutes, but last night, I couldn’t shake the images.
So I was really looking forward to sleeping in. HAH!
Not that I’ll have a busy day, but some days, I just need an extra hour.
Good Saturday Morning!
Another chilly overnight, stayed just above freezing here... a couple more nights of this, then a warmup with some needed rains... 🤞🏻
Being outside most of the day in the brisk air got rid of that stuffed, lethargic feeling from over eating... thankfully!
BTW, we have really been enjoying Morse... very different from some of the other series (e.g., DiP) that we had been watching...
At least I didn’t get a 3rd 5 in a row today...

Morse is quite good, and I followed that immediately with “Lewis,” which was the name of his Detective Sergeant. Both were well-written and fun, I thought.
The series on Masterpiece Theater called “Endeavour” was about the young Morse, and it was quite good in itself! There were lots of little hints about “the future” Morse in it, and even John Thaw’s daughter plays in “Endeavour.” I still need to get the last season of it.
The Brits are extremely good script writers and overall story tellers, for sure! Right T-c?
10°F here again.
Fortunately the furnace works...
Stay warm, my friend! Ask Tyson-who-isn’t-allowed-on-the-furniture, if he will share your bed. He might take pity!
He did last night. 5 hours without being able to roll over, cuz rover.
And of course some time between 3:00 and 3:30 every morning he needs to be reassured he’s welcome here and loved, and of course petted and praised.
Some day his anxiety will fade.
Yes, plan to follow with Lewis… great scripts and character development…
VERY fortunate that your furnace works!
