Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

No, that is not my cat. (We do not, at the moment, have a cat, although there have been two attempts by cats to move in with us since Jake died in mid-November.)

The picture is from “I Can Haz Cheezburger”.

I feel like the guessers would rather err on the side of Every Panic! than be accused of not warning people.

Sorry that Jake passed. Them kittahs were watching Jake and knew Jake had a loving home. Hope them kittahs didn’t contribute to Jake’s passing.

Jake had large tumors on his kidneys, we learned when I took him to the vet because his health was obviously failing. He had a good quality of life until the last couple of weeks. He was 15.

We’re not having another cat, as I keep saying when cats show up at the door telling me they want to live with us.

Yeah, that would explain a lot. But 150 years ago, we had actual foreguessers almost in every house. Or we could call a friend who did it. People these days are lazy and don’t want to study the signs.

My dad taught me a lot about the weather when I was a short person, and I just passed it on. If I don’t go outside to do it, I make it a point to watch the weather patterns on the laptop. I mean, it’s not as if the information isn’t there....

Even my streaming TV has a free weather channel. So why panic?

I think some people just have fun panicking.

I took Manuka honey for something else about 10-12 years ago, and was really impressed with it and the way it tasted. Just eating it on toast with butter was a real treat. I can’t recall why I used it, but I think I used it for about a year, or maybe two.

So yes, I will try it again! And hopefully, it will help! Thanks for the suggestion!

The wind is up again, but the day isn’t quite as cold as it was a day or two ago. I just know that I need to get something to seal off the windows. If I were young and agile, and still bent in places where I’m supposed to, I’d get some clear plastic for them and get it taped up. It would help in the summer, as well, even though the windows here are double paned for insulation.

I’ll have to have someone help me do it, but it may not get done before spring.

Jim did a good job sealing the Plexiglas but it’s awfully thin, so it lets in the cold. The plastic would help.

I hope you have a good night. Fill in my rant about how your apartment should be weatherproofed because that’s just the decent thing.

Old apartmwnts, neglect through the years, and presto - drafty places in need of weather proofing.

But since I have to live here, I want to do so as cheaply as possible, and that means keeping the drafts to a minimum.

What a cute picture!

Good morning. Did you have a good night?

I made up for not sleeping well night before last. But the next two night will be moider!

Not sure if I’ll go to church, but will probably watch on Zoom. I’ve got the S-L-O-W-S this morning.

It’s 25° out and the high of 45 is expected. No wonder I didn’t want to get up! But, I was also up a little later than usual last night, too.

FS said he took one of the VWs out for a spin yesterday, so the streets were dry and the roads clear. Good for him! I envied that. Too bad he couldn’t have put one together for me while I was there....
