Rivalry week gets most of the attention, but the penultimate Saturday of the regular season always seems to pack some surprises. Nowhere was that more clear than the SEC, which saw top contenders No. 7 Alabama, No. 11 Ole Miss and No. 15 Texas A&M all lose in shockers to shape up the league's championship race.
However, the Big 12 remains the most chaotic conference in the sport. Both Big 12 favorites Colorado and BYU dropped stunners to alter the conference standings. The Buffs lost against a Kansas team fighting for bowl eligibility, while Arizona State wrestled the Big 12-favorite mantle from the Cougars.

All week leading up to this past Saturday the SEC Just Means More crowd led by Finebaum has expressed its horror that the B1G and SEC had equal number of playoff entries. Also, they expressed their horror of three of their teams would have to travel north of the Mason-Dixon line to play. The football gods listening to the whining punished the SEC for their pride this Saturday.
But first, the football gods teased the SEC Kool Aid drinkers by proving their point about how much a fraud Indiana is. But then the gods unleashed the plague in SEC country. Three bottom feeders of the SEC beat three SEC playoff contenders. One top SEC team did enjoy the death and destruction, Tennessee.
Alabama, and Ole Miss now at 3 losses are done.
Is Notre Dame a lock for bid even if they lose to USC?
Is the ACC now a two bid league?
What an irony Napier beat the coach who was rumored to be coming to Gainesville to take his job.
Likely.
In before the “OH!” Oh wait…..”OH!”
Proverbs 14:30 - A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
I think what’s happening in the SEC is with all the millions being pumped into the NIL and Recruiting, the talent level has evened out, especially with Texas and Oklahoma coming into the league, heck even Vanderbilt is not a pushover anymore, they are buying players and spending money on their stadium.
If you look at the rosters of a lot of teams in the SEC, you will see key players who were recruited via the portal making big statements at SEC schools.
One of UF’s better pass rushers is from Northern Illinois.
If you are a stud player a lower-level school or conference and want to play in a top-level conference like the SEC, why not use the portal to get some nice NIL money while getting seen more often because of TV and play in front of packed stadiums every week.
Plus if you were a 5-star recruit and went to Georgia or Alabama and are sharing time with other 5-star recruits, you are tempted to leave and play somewhere else for NIL money and get more playing time.
Add all that up and the talent level has evened out a lot, making for much closer games where anything can happen.
I was wondering if B1G Commissioner Tony Petitti called THE Ohio State University to dial it back as they were obliterating Indiana.
Excellent point and it does make it much more exciting.
”IO!” Looking forward to the beating the Buckeyes are going to put on UM this Saturday.
Expansion of SEC hurt the old teams.
Texas looking solid.
Oregon looking like the team to beat.
I don’t like the realignment. It’s a mess.
Also don’t like we may now need a salary cap for college.
If you watch the NFL at all, it seems like every week over half the games are one score games with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter, making for some crazy finishes and games getting decided on the last play.
When you throw in the Gambling angle on the NFL, it’s a major reason they have such big TV numbers every week.
The SEC and college football in general is becoming much more like the NFL with free agency only worse because in college football, it’s 100% free agency every year with no salary cap.
SMU can’t be counted out when they can pay their players. Lots of money in Dallas to hire good talent. Of course the ACC will get two spots if that is what it takes to get Miami in.
Aggies for an upset against Texas with some interesting calls by the officials for my prediction for next week.
Dawgs don’t deserve a spot after their poor performance yesterday - giving up 21 points to a 2-9 team that no conference wants, while the quarterback has his usual uneven performance and was outperformed statistically by Stockton.
Penn State - ranked #4 - beat un-ranked Minnesota by just one point, 26-25.
Undefeated Army - ranked #19 - was crushed by #6 Notre Dame, 49-14.
Undefeated Indiana - ranked #5 - was crushed by #2 Ohio State, 38-15.
#12 Boise State (10-1) beat un-ranked Wyoming (2-9) by just 4 points.
Yeah, at this point they need to remove the “college” part of “college football.”
My issue is Deion. The media sucks up to him so much. They like to talk about him moving on to the pros and he poo poos it while eating up the attention at same time.
His success will be determined by the athletes and coaches he’ll attract with his personality-like a pied piper for ‘confident’ black men. Too much tv coverage to watch him walk on the sidelines. At least he’s stepped up as opposed to those pregame bs shows.
Oregon vs OSU is going to be a great rematch.
Penn State could have had one more touchdown at the end but instead the receiver sat down on the 2 yard line to kill the clock.
It looked that way, didn’t it. Call off your big dogs, Day.
Gotta beat Michigan first. No game is a gimme.
The gambling has changed the pro and the college game. Personally, I wish it wasn’t legal.
