As a guide dog handler of 25 and a half years, I’ve had hundreds of experiences of being refused service - but online threats and increasing hostility towards disabled people mean I’m giving up on asking publicly for equality and respect.
The last straw came about a week ago. I was already reeling from a number of refusals by restaurants and shops when, once again, I was refused entry because I have a guide dog.
I visited the restaurant, which I have chosen not to name, but was told I couldn’t enter as people could have allergies. This, by the way, is unlawful.
They later changed their reason - saying they simply had no space.
It’s difficult to describe how this feels.
I don’t think you can understand it unless you know what it is like to face daily discrimination.
I compare the feeling to December 2022 when I was briefly robbed of my smartphone near the BBC building in central London.
Unlike street robberies, refusals are rarely violent or physical, but the feeling of being slugged in the gut is identical.
I argue refusals feel worse - because at least I can understand the motivation of robbers.

Not really. Not if they are house dogs. Used to be a fairly common sight in England.
I was suspicious about that too, but he really is blind. Details buried far down in the article describe how the man became completely blind (I think by his teens) due to glaucoma, hypertension, and other conditions.
Reportedly in Britain denial of service due to a guide dog is unlawful, but it is a criminal offence only for taxis and similar conveyances. For restaurants, inns, etc., it is a civil matter. Collecting evidence, suing, and maybe getting some pittance is on the victim — a ridiculous burden on a blind person. It’s hard enough just to get around for life’s essentials.
I’m guessing dog-hating South Asians are the main jerks discriminating in Britain.
These emotional support dogs are a freaking joke. The ADA should be modified to allow only dogs to veterans with PTSD.
Real guide dogs cannot legally be refused. But these nuts with their emotional support pets are a fraud. With the exception of true sufferers of PTSD, such as soldiers or rape victims and the like, they should not be allowed. But since this person lives in the UK, I suggest he move to Midsomer, where everyone is friendly, accepting, and kind, with the exception of a weekly murder...
I suppose the rejection for his disability needs is more personal than a random robbery.
I’m annoyed by the big fat people in carts, but then, they would never be able to shop without a cart. Nobody wants to be that big. And there are attendant physical problems, such as shortness of breath and severe joint problems, so I’m going to have mercy on them and give them a pass.
Just as handicap parking spots used to be for people in a wheelchair. Now EVERYONE has a temporary placard. A completely abused service...
My husband has emphysema and is oxygen dependent. He is not in a wheelchair. If he had to walk from the middle of the average parking lot, he would be at risk of passing out. But, hey, just like those huge fatties who use those handicap spaces, he did this to himself, right? And those aren’t “temporary placards”, they’re State issued handicap placards which require a doctor’s order. Have a little compassion
I worked for a white British guy ( in his restaurant,) and he hated having to let service dogs in his establishment.
They are also legit for other disabilities such as deafness and seizures. Emotional support dogs, however, are not service dogs and should not be treated as such.
Strange! I’ve been to restaurants in the UK that allowed pets in. First time I saw it I was startled by it, told it was common.

House dogs are just a bad a dog is a filthy inside or out side they have worms the brown marks on your floor is from it dragging it’s ass across it.
They need to be banned form any store especially food stores there is not a reason they need to be allowed in one.
