Jones was known in right wing circles but I doubt many people in the general public, particularly in a liberal area like Fairfield County, Connecticut knew much about him.

As for why Infowars is no longer anathema on FR, that was a management decision by Mr. Robinson. I suspect it is because the conservative community has moved away from the Bush/Dole/Romney/McCain Republican Party and the older consensus of National Review and the AM talk radio of 10-20 years ago. The rise of podcasts and blogs and the effect of Trump transformed the conservative media world.
