Authorities in South Carolina on Thursday warned residents to lock their doors and windows after more than 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility.
The primates broke loose from a Alpha Genesis facility in Beaufort County and traps have been set up and thermal imaging cameras are being used in an effort to locate the fugitive monkeys, the Yemassee Police Department said in a statement.
In an update posted Thursday, police confirmed 43 rhesus macaque primates escaped and none had been captured as of early afternoon. Authorities said the primates were "very young females weighing approximately 6-7 lbs" and had never been used for testing due to their age.
"Alpha Genesis currently have eyes on the primates and are working to entice them with food," police said, describing the monkeys as "skittish."

Oh man..
ANOTHER PLANdemic?
I still have my Monkeypox decorations up…
They probably saw what the New York government did to Peanut the Squirrel & Fred the Raccoon and figured their safest course of action
was to break out of the slammer and get lost in the swamps and bayous of coastal South Carolina.
Monkeys are difficult to keep, and can be very dangerous.
There it is.
The next "Trump" pandemic.
I wonder if they were researching Ebola treatments.
I look for labels that specify no animal testing. I’d rather people with full mental capacity volunteer for testing if testing is needed. Let them negotiate a reward they find acceptable. An animal has no power in testing.
Spoken as someone who accepted a college grade drop in Biology for not murdering fruit flies and squashing chromosomes.
So they were used for testing ... testing for what?
Monkeys don’t have to be flying to be a menace. Have you seen vids of monkeys in places where they live naturally? They are like squirrels, but far more intelligent. They can be a real p.i.a. to live around.
Thank God it wasn’t 12.
What do you think about this? How did 43 monkeys get away?
Animals are used for lots of things. It could be a dietary/nutritional study, psychological and behavioral study, drug development, etc.
Many important drugs we take were developed through animal research. And if your own pet dog or cat is sick, and a vet prescribes a drug, surgery, or other therapy, that will have been tested/developed using animals, too.
It could have happened through some kind of transfer; something in an enclosure could have been insecure; it could have happened in many ways.
I know a vet who once had a whole room full of monkeys manage to get out of their enclosures.
I’ve also worked in a facility where animal rights nuts once broke in and released a room full of animals.
We know too little about this to be jumping to ‘scare’ conclusions.
“12 Monkeys” was a great movie.
Probably the best acting Brad Pitt had ever done. Along with roles in Snatch and Kalifornia.
Gee, I wonder what diseases they are carrying and I find the escape excuse bullchit.
CDC used to run a primate center called Yerkes Primate Center. I’d imagine those poor little guys were dosed up with all sorts for crap.
More gain of function research? What could go wrong?
Yes, there was a movie like that and also a great book, “The Hot Zone”, true story - about the Ebola virus escaping from a lab in DC....
“”A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic “hot” virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their “crashes” into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.””
Brad Pitt made good on his promise to leave the US if the Republican (Bush Jr.?) became President. He went to his Chateau in France. He said France was a great place to raise kids. I assume he hired private tutors.
