The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an emergency appeal from Republicans that could have led to thousands of provisional ballots not being counted in the battleground state.
The justices left in place a state Supreme Court ruling that elections officials must count provisional ballots cast by voters whose mail-in ballots were rejected.
As of Thursday, about 9,000 ballots out of more than 1.6 million returned have arrived at elections offices around Pennsylvania lacking a secrecy envelope, a signature or a date, according to state records.
Pennsylvania is the biggest presidential election battleground this year, with 19 electoral votes.
In 2020, it was decided by about 80,000 votes.
The case dealt in part with 'naked ballots,' those without a security sleeve that gets included in mail ballots but which some voters may neglect to use.
The Republican National Committee said it could impact 'tens of thousands of votes in a state which many anticipate could be decisive.'
Wrote Justice Samuel Alito, 'even if we agreed with the applicants’ federal constitutional argument (a question on which I express no view at this time), we could not prevent the consequences they fear.'
There weren't any dissents.
The Supreme Court's rejection comes after an intervention by its conservative majority, off its 'shadow docket', that boosted the Republican position in Virginia.
That decision, which the court released without explanation, allowed the state to purge about about 1,600 people from its rolls just a week before the election.

IF counting does not start until polls are closed on TUES-—How do they KNOW MAIL IN BALLOTS are rejected???
They are processing the ballots, not counting them. Most states begining processing ballots before election day. That is checking the names off the voter list, opening the envelopes and separating the identity info, dropping the ballots into a box and then running them through the ballot machine. No totals are printed until after 8 pm on Election day.
Here in Portland Maine they spend 5 days with six ballot machines (3 state and 3 municipal) to keep up with the volume. They have 40,000 ballots to process. It is how we can get it done by midnight on election night.
The public has been welcome to sit and watch the process.
Good decision.
There are no Presidential elections in the Constitution and the Legislature of Pennsylvania has sovereign power to make rules or pass laws about how Pennsylvania’s Electors are appointed.
IF Pennsylvania laws allow this provisional ballot stupidity, no Federal Court or other entity outside of Pennsylvania has any authority over it - except if the Federal Constitution, as amended, forbids a State from passing any specific law.
For example, the US Constitution would not permit Pennsylvania to appoint Electors through a State election in which women were not allowed to vote.

SCOTUS aka Supreme Clowns of the US
I am getting so tired of this. Election procedures need to be standardized across the board, every state, and it needs to be as simple as possible. We all here know how to get that done but blast it, these judges and their democratic counterparts are blatantly screwing things up in order to facilitate their steal.
Might want to read the story? It quotes Alito, not Roberts, in the rejection of the appeal. Seems there was a question of whether Federal Courts had jurisdiction in a state case. I’m not sure I’d call Alito a traitor based on this particular case.
Which side did Roberts come down on?
Because they notify them that their ballot needs to be cured.
The Trump path to victory is MAGA overwhelming the count by actual election day. It’s going to still be tight. The cheat and steal is in effect.
Po leti shall correctness is going to be the ruination of this country
So...the PA supreme court said dates not necessary and then SCOTUS said yes they are? I’m confused about what’s floating around on this
The Bottom Line —
The law says ballots must arrive at the tabulation point by 8 PM election day evening.
What date is hand written on the exterior envelope will have no impact on the 8 PM requirement.
The handwritten date is a requirement without purpose.
