Dog Survives Vicious Mountain Lion Attack, on the Road to Recovery

A dog survived a vicious mountain lion attack in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was a harrowing experience for Bella's owner, Richard Baker.

It all happened last week when Baker let Bella outside, nothing unusual for his dogs. However, moments later, she returned to the front door after being mauled by the animal, covering her body with deep wounds and bite marks.

“She walked out, about 20 to 30 minutes later, she walked back in, totally ripped up,” said Baker.

Baker rushed her from his home to the Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists, a 24-hour emergency vet hospital.

When she arrived at the vet’s doors, they weren't sure she could survive her injuries.

“My first reaction, to be honest, was I don’t know if I can save her,” said Nick Macy, Veterinary and Medical Director at Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists.

Not only were there deep bite marks and major skin damage, but the big cat even punctured her skull.

Before you know it, Bella will be right as rain, and back to guarding her owner's meth cooker.

Why is Bella such a common name now for dogs?

Is the name from some Lifetime movie?

#7: "Why is Bella such a common name now for dogs?"

I've noticed that too. Weird, isn't it? The only thing I associate with "Bella" is that old hag witch feminazi, the late Bella Abzug.

Oh, I'm happy that Bella pulled through. I love dogs. One of my dogs was attacked unprovoked by a pit pull, but my dog pulled through from his injuries.

Buried down in the article is this. What a freaking idiot...
Nick Macy, Veterinary and Medical Director at Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists: “There’s never a week where we don’t have at least two to three major wounds to take care of. With climate change, it’s really important for people to be aware that animals are coming into not just rural neighborhoods, but urban neighborhoods as well.”
Yep, we never had wild animals move into rural and urban neighborhoods until we discovered climate change.

And my Pit Bull (RIP) was attacked unprovoked by some mutt that leapt out of a parked car to do it.
Not the breed, owners, training, socializing.

My wife named our last dog Bella. SHe was a 3/4 Rat Terrier 1/4 Chihuahua mix. She liked the name. Our current dog is named Josie, and we got her on the Feast of St. Joseph.

Bella was the name of the main character in the Twilight movies. I noticed many dogs named Bella in my neighborhood after that first movie came out.

Dog is very lucky. When I first moved to California in the 90s, there was a news story of a guy in Simi Valley who heard a major racket on his back porch involving his Siberian Husky. He opened the door to see a massive mountain lion with his 90 pound dog by the throat. Still carrying the dog, it jumped over the garden wall and disappeared into the mountains. I don’t think they ever found the dog.

Isn’t it from the Stephanie Meyer “Twilight” books/movies?

Figures it was from a teen vampire movie made for teen girls.

Not something I would have known about.
