An Iowa resident has died after contracting a frightening viral disease, similar to Ebola, that leaves victims bleeding from their eyeballs.

The patient had returned to the U.S. from West Africa earlier this month bringing the disease know as Lassa Fever, rarely seen in the U.S., back with them, health officials said.

The person was not sick while traveling meaning the risk to fellow airline passengers is 'extremely low,' officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Iowa resident...returning from West Africa...

It wouldn’t surprise me if this was an “asylum claimant” who crossed illegally and went back for a visit in the land of his persecution.

Or maybe this was a completely legitimate resident/ immigrant who waited in line,or a missionary on a humanitarian visit.

I don’t know. It’s just that terms like “Iowa resident” are used freely by the media, implying what isn’t so.

"It seems we should have better controls around disease from other countries."

Someone tell our government geniuses that NOT having wide open borders would be helpful.

In the days of steamship travel people coming from certain areas of the world were held in quarantine before being given access to enter our nation. Now we are supposed to rely on vaccines.

I don’t want to belabor something trivial, but, sure, the singular “they” has been around for a long time — mostly in informal speech, but every so often in writing by well-known authors. (In classical literature, this is often a situation where “they” refers back to a singular noun used to represent a large class of individuals, which is different from its use to avoid saying “he” or “she.”)

I still see no reason that authorities can’t release the sex of somebody who has caught a disease; that’s not going to lead to any privacy violation. More generally, I think the exteme interpretation of HIPAA has led to excessive secrecy, keeping the public unaware of medical info that would be helpful if generally known.

As for “they” vs. “he or she” in actual usage, I can’t say that I find “he or she” clunky if used occasionally. When I find myself writing something that requires many uses of either singular “they” or “he or she,” I generally rewrite the passage to avoid the issue.

Even though the singular “they” does have a long history (mostly in informal spoken language), the Wikipedia article on it is chock full of references to non-binary individuals and the like — that’s how it’s often viewed these days, and I don’t want to cooperate in that.

Well, I’m not going to be bullied into NOT using ‘they’ in a way I’ve always done, any more than I’ll be bullied into using it where it isn’t appropriate.

The world can just change around me. I’ll stay where I am in this regard.
