A Note on the Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address
when Barack Obama recited it on its 150th anniversary, he omitted the words “under God” from the last sentence:
that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
his apologists later claimed that the words weren’t in the version he had, but the Bliss version, signed and dated by Lincoln himself, and considered to be the authoritative written version, contain them (and Lincoln was reported to have said them when he delivered the Address)
