Golda Meir, the fourth Prime Minister of Israel, famously said: “Let me tell you the one thing I have against Moses. He took us forty years into the desert in order to bring us to the one place in the Middle East that has no oil!”
The way I understood it was that the Jewish people were a hard-necked people. They wandered around in a circle, around the same mountain, for 40 years, because they refused to admit they didn’t know where they were going. Even though they kept running into familiar ground on each complete circuit, the men refused to pull over and ask for directions.
