It was a real flight to nowhere.
Passengers aboard a recent international American Airlines flight were flabbergasted after the plane turned around five hours into the trip — without any explanation.
One of the flummoxed flyers detailed the aerial about-face in a viral Instagram video.
“American Airlines needs a lesson in effective communication,” Jimin Lee, 41, captioned the clip of the incident, which occurred Sept. 7 aboard AA flight 281 from Dallas, Texas, to Seoul, South Korea

crew members provided “zero explanation” for aborting the flight bound for Incheon International Airport,

Straight out of a novel. The possibilities are endless.
I made a big mistake and didn’t see the date on the flight was 8 Sep. Old news on FR posted as current.
Insert “Surely, you can’t be serious?” meme
If the plane was experiencing technical issues, surely they would not head back to Dallas, right? Surely they’d want to safely land the plane at the nearest reachable airport that had a runway big enough(?) So, assuming it’s not a technical issue, what could possibly justify turning the plane around and flying 5 hours back to Dallas? Pilot couldn’t stop wondering if he closed his garage door when he left for the airport that morning?
What kind of plane?
Hope one of the pilots didn’t 😵
You funny man.
You’d tink they could have at least gone back eastward to Seattle, where American Airlines also runs flights to Inchon, Korea, changing passengers to a plane in Seattle, with the total delay being a few hours and not a whole day. You’d think airlines would take such possibillities into its plans and operations.
Certainly could be that.
“There’s more to this story than they are saying.”
Especially since they aren’t saying anything.
Looks like Seattle or Portland OR were closest alternate airports.
Flying 5 hrs back to Dallas is very
unusual.
We were between Honolulu and Anchorage, and “Pete’s Dragon” opening music was starting. Then POW! Huge bang and the plane (DC10) shuddered, and began to descend quickly. Total silence. Everyone had a terrified look on their faces.
We asked the attendants what that bang was. “I didn’t hear anything.” 🙄
Then the plane evened out and made a 180 turn. Nobody told us ANYTHING for about a half hour. That was the worst part — not having information. We assumed we’d be in the drink soon.
We had lost an engine and had to return to HI because were about five minutes short of the half-way point. I guess that was policy then (the ‘80s) — to go to the closest airport.
You could hear a pin drop on our flight but we didn’t lose altitude. We circled over Omaha for another 30-45 minutes because they were having ice storms below us and they turned us back to Minneapolis. Got to Minn. got off the plane onto another and we were back in Omaha an hour later.
I worked with some ex-military who flew missions over South America and they’d tell stories of lightning strikes and watching it travel down the skin of the aircraft since they didn’t have the lining that commercial aircraft has.

WAZE said go back.
Was the pilot the grand son of “Wrong Way” Corrigan?
A credible threat to the plane. Either man made or mechanical. They aren’t going to announce, “ we are turning around because Achmed planted a bomb in his check in.”
Or it could be a VIP left medicines or golf clubs. Something that was embarrassing to the airline.
Mystery Flight.
Maybe something going down on the Peninsula and they were waved off.
